MPA Radio 078 –  Arthur Russell Special

The original DIY, Experimental with more than a touch of pop melodies thrown in.

Arthur Russell was a singular force in late-20th-century music — cellist, composer, singer, and producer whose work defied easy categorisation. Born in Iowa and later based in New York’s vibrant downtown scene of the ’70s and ’80s, he moved effortlessly between avant-garde minimalism, left-field disco, folk-pop intimacy, and experimental soundscapes. Fearless in his process, Russell layered tape loops, cello, drum machines, and voice in endlessly evolving forms, constantly reworking ideas rather than chasing perfection. He collaborated with everyone from Philip Glass to Talking Heads, yet much of his music remained deeply personal and quietly visionary, often recorded in his apartment with an ear for texture, space, and emotional honesty. His songs could be sparse and haunting or rhythmically hypnotic, always carrying a sense of vulnerability and curiosity. Though his life was cut short in 1992, Arthur Russell’s boundary-breaking spirit and experimental approach continue to inspire generations of artists across genres. Plenty of drum machine action here.
