With an EP out this Spring, “Cake” makes GLDI’s first-ever official release, and firm reminder that girls can have their cake and eat it too. Featured on DSP’s biggest New Music playlists including Spotify’s New Music Friday, Fresh Finds, and Salt, as well as Apple Music’s New in Pop, “Cake” has been a swift success. But while the song beckons listeners to seize desires unapologetically, GLDI elaborates that her intention for “Cake” was that it serve as a liberating, coming-out-of-the-closet record. Says GLDI, “I want what I want and I don’t have to be anything you want me to be- that’s what CAKE is about. But it’s more than just ‘I want to smoke, and eat, and drink, and love who I want’. It’s also that I want to assume whatever sexual identity I feel suits me. I’m fighting for the right not to have to choose. Not between boys or girls, not between feminine or masculine, not between what feels good versus what is “right”, and certainly not between who I want to be versus the person who is expected of me. I wanna have my cake and eat it too.”

But where “Cake” begs listeners to seize desire with both hands, “Quit It” instead tells desire to “just stop”. The song’s “no means no” message is a girl-power anthem for females who have ever had to endure the discomfort of an unwanted sexual advance. Aptly released on inauguration day 2021, the song takes on new meaning as a perfect response to antagonists in both the White House and your DMs.
