02 Colle San - The Native Project

Since the start of 2019, we've been recording pretty much every minute of every function that's happened at Nowadays. We're lucky enough to be in a position to host the most amazing DJs in the game every single week, both from within the scene here in New York and around the world, and it only felt right to try and share some of the action with those who couldn't make it and with those who want to relive it.

The first installment comes from beloved Nowadays resident and queen of the twilight hours, Beta Librae. Bailey's contributions to the vibe down here, both as a friend, a DJ and a dancer have been tremendous, and what she served up on the hi-fi back in early February blew our minds. This excerpt is taken from the last two hours of the party, just after Noncompliant had finished, and it flawlessly stitches together mutant electro oddities, heady, tribal bombs and super tight, tech-house rollers.

Big thanks to Bailey for the killer sounds, to Lou for the mastering, and to all the hardcore, late-night/early-morning heads for their energy on the dance floor. It might get foggy in here sometimes, but we see you.

Nowadays Live And Direct 001 - Beta Librae

Wallflower continues her exploration of feminine archetypes: possessive love, the power of creation itself and here she calls on Baba Yaga the fearsome bloodthirsty hag capable of ruthless destruction and loving nurturing. I’m sure some of you have met her or indeed been possessed by her. 
She tests the limits of endurance and presents the challenge of darkness. At first it seems a sad tale and yet we all know that you can’t have the light without the dark - with destruction comes rebirth.

The package includes some strong reworks. Julian Kendall, dj/producer based in Detroit, gives us a deeper journey trough his “lo-fi mo-town sound”, a reflection on digging through record bins and messing around on old keyboards and drum machines. Nandu combines raw percussions with an intense synth line to build the tension and giving a great energy. Following the success of his ‘U, Me and Madonna EP’, 1-800 Girls reworks the song adding his signature sound made of broken rhythms, warm bass and some smooth pads.

For Eris’s mixtape “Raving Disco Breaks Vol. 1”, she uses old records to create a new style out of fragments. Many of the selections have been featured heavily in her live DJ sets, including her b2b sets with Octo Octa. Eris accumulated these records slowly, over decades, but it wasn’t until touring last year that she realized a “sound” coalesced in her bag. What does a rave at the disco sound like? Kinda like everyone took ecstasy at the roller rink. On her ecstatic mix, Eris colleges together a genre by scratching-in breaks with horn samples, mixing Disco House with broken beats, dropping Miami Bass jams with Boogie keys and blending Rave tunes with disco vocals. On the mix Eris utilizes turntable techniques such as “doubles” tricks and “hot mixing”—a fast-paced mixing style inspired by her beloved B96 Mixmasters, Chicago’s most popular 1990’s radio DJs. Like all of Eris’s mixes, she weaves strong narratives of embodiment, defiance, cultural transcendence and personal triumph (a classic disco emotion) into a flow of body rockin’ beats, scratches, drops, and sweet melodies. The result is a bass heavy summertime house mix for the psychedelic bad girls, boys and enbys.

All profits  from Eris’s mix will be donated to the Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP), which works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine their gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence.

Eris Drew Raving Disco Breaks Vol 1.

Following on from his well received ‘L’Avventura’ 12”, Warsaw based Bartosz Kruczyński returns as Earth Trax to Phonica’s main label for another EP, this time in collaboration with regular production partner Newborn Jr.

The pair have created a string of brilliant records together, such as ‘Sax & Flute’ on Rhythm Section, ‘Mirage’ on Les Yeux Orange and ‘If You’ on Shall Not Fade. Bartosz also has a growing solo discography under his own name, along with a variety of aliases such as The Phantom, Pejzaz, and of course; Earth Trax.

The A side here offers two versions of the title track, ‘Truth’, in which rose-tinted reminiscences of the golden late 80s era of house music literally echo, with dubbed out diva vocals cascading over wide snares and an almighty bassline, appearing through shimmering delays and reverbs like a vision of bygone nights reappearing in a dream.
