Magic Tape 128

Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's short story "The Music of Erich Zann". Written in December 1921, it was first published in National Amateur, March 1922.

Lyrics

I searched for the street, but I never returned,
The Rue d’ Auseil, where the shadows still burned.
The houses were leaning, the windows were blind,
And strange was the music that haunted my mind.

The old man was silent, his fingers were frail,
Yet all of his bowing told more than a tale.
No song of the earth, no measure or key,
But music that opened the void unto me.

The viol screams, the darkness calls,
The shutter shakes, the window falls.
Beyond the wall, no city stands,
Only the void in endless lands.
The wind breaks in, the candles die,
A nameless sound consumes the sky.
No mortal song can drown its breath,
The music fights the hands of death.

The candles grew dim, and the night-wind was loud,
It carried his papers away like a shroud.
I reached for the window, expecting the flame,
But chaos unending was all that remained.

The viol screams, the darkness calls,
The shutter shakes, the window falls.
Beyond the wall, no city stands,
Only the void in endless lands.
The wind breaks in, the candles die,
A nameless sound consumes the sky.
No mortal song can drown its breath,
The music fights the hands of death.

The night became deeper, the silence was torn,
By music that battled what should not be born.
The stars had no meaning, the sky had no ground,
The void was alive with unbearable sound.

His bow kept on moving though he was long dead,
The glass in his eyes showed the madness he fled.
The viol kept screaming, though breath was no more,
A dirge for the gateway no man should explore.

The Viol Screams

Based on H.P. Lovecraft's sequence of 36 sonnets "Fungi from Yuggoth", which was published complete in Beyond the Wall of Sleep (Sauk City, Wisconsin: Arkham House, 1943, 395–407). Most of the sonnets were written between 27 December 1929 – 4 January 1930; thereafter individual sonnets appeared in Weird Tales and other genre magazines.

Its pages breathed with burning words and stars that never die.
I fled through alleys drenched in fog, the tome pressed to my chest,
The skies grew warped, the stones alive, as terror stole my rest.

Underneath the void, where no gods remain,
We are bound to knowledge wrapped in death and pain.

An altar rose through dreaming fog, with shapes too strange to name,
The daemon called from out the void, and I, in madness, came.
Through gulfs where ancient forces stir, he led my soul in flight,
And showed the death behind the stars, the end beyond all light.

He walked through fire and whispering voids where ancient empires fell,
A thousand voices cried through him, like echoes out of hell.
He showed the stars beyond the stars, then tore the veil apart,
And left the world in silent ash, with madness in its heart.

Based on H.P. Lovecraft's poem "Hallowe'en in a Suburb", which was published as "In a Suburb" in The National Amateur, March 1926.

Lyrics:

The steeples are white in the wild moonlight,
And the trees have a silver glare;
Past the chimneys high see the vampires fly,
And the harpies of upper air,
That flutter and laugh and stare.

For the village dead to the moon outspread
Never shone in the sunset's gleam,
But grew out of the deep that the dead years keep
Where the rivers of madness stream
Down the gulfs to a pit of dream.

Not a breath of the strange grey gods of change
That tore from the past its own
Can quicken this hour, when a spectral power
Spreads sleep o'er the cosmic throne,
And looses the vast unknown.

So here again stretch the vale and plain
That moons long-forgotten saw,
And the dead leap gay in the pallid ray,
Sprung out of the tomb's black maw
To shake all the world with awe.

And all that the morn shall greet forlorn,
The ugliness and the pest
Of rows where thick rise the stones and brick,
Shall some day be with the rest,
And brood with the shades unblest.

So here again stretch the vale and plain

And the ghouls of the churchyard wail

Based on "Annabel Lee", the last poem Edgar Allan Poe completed. Written in 1849 and published shortly after his death, it remains one of his most haunting works on love and loss.

It was many and many a year ago, 
In a kingdom by the sea, 
That a maiden there lived whom you may know 
By the name of Annabel Lee; 
And this maiden she lived with no other thought 
Than to love and be loved by me. 

She was a child and I was a child
In this kingdom by the sea,

Wake Up

After hitting the studio and recording a debut album in 2010, The New Beans appeared in various international magazines, blogs and radio stations (USA, UK, Sweden, France) before the release of their self-titled debut. In the weeks that followed, it became one of the top albums on Napster, appearing next to acts such as The Killers, Florence + The Machine and Phoenix . The music was also featured on the popular discovery app 'Band Of The Day' and the track Soundtrack of the New Age was featured in the season finale of the Amazon original series 'Betas'. 
The UK-based music project has toured Buenos Aires, Berlin and Edinburgh’s most prominent clubs and their new single 'Berlin' is set to be released on March 2, 2021.
