The Newspapers is a Pretoria-based, melodic rock band originating from the small coal mining town of Witbank in Mpumalanga. With the imminent release of their debut E.P., the band has spent the past couple of years honing their songwriting & performance skills and has already shared the stage with local industry heavyweights Fokofpolisiekar, aKING, Evolver One, Tidal Waves, Tumi & the Volume and Prime Circle, another band to emerge from Witbank.

The band formed in 2008 after a chance meeting at a party by Jared Cowley and Meredith Harmse. Brink Jacobs joined the pair behind the drumkit and the nucleus for the current lineup was formed. The Newspapers relocated to Pretoria where the rhythm section was completed by the highly experienced Stefan Henrico on bass guitar, after spotting an ad for the vacancy online. Henrico’s résumé boasts stints with Chris Chameleon, Louise Carver, Even Flow and a tour of Germany with Myepic.

The Newspapers’ first foray into the recording studio was with award-winning musician, Nathan Waywell (Cassette, Amersham). Waywell produced and recorded the single “King Of No Book” which enjoyed airplay on campus stations UCT Radio and PUK FM, as well as regional radio station, MPower FM. They most recently spent time at B Sharp Studios recording their debut E.P. with John Paul de Stefani (Fokofpolisiekar, aKING, Foto Na Dans, Just Jinger, Sugardrive).
