"Piccolo inventario degli insetti" (2017)
for Ensemble and Electronics

Scored for four instruments and electronics, Piccolo inventario degli insetti finds its roots in my interest and fascination for mechanisms and how the unaltered perfection of the mechanical processes try to imitate the perishable and complex imperfection of organic ones.
In this sense, I conceived the work as a dialectic between the two worlds, the organic one identified with the “human performers” and the mechanical one identified in the electronics; then I set them into motion and I let them interact driving the piece to a situation in which the electronics becomes more and more organic and the instruments remain trapped in alienating gears.
The metaphor of the insects came up in my mind in totally natural and automatic way: the sound world that this piece builds bar after bar is like a soundscape of a microscopic nature, with all his internal complexity, as well as the electronics is made up of numerous internal feedback chains, as a kind of mechanical entomology inside the hidden world of the computer that comes up and faces the acoustic world of the ensemble.

Program Notes

“…risuona piu lontano che mai” is a work shaped and, at the same time, fractured by the brevity of its mnemonic fragments, which reappear in manifold and often distressing reocurrences and insistent retrospections through a series of regenerations and rearrangements of the material. Echoing the strangeness of an indescribable sound, these mnemonic fragments are advancing and regressing non-linearly, in stumbles and stutters, uncertainties and hesitations. They are treated as, what Deleuze (and Guattari would call, blocks of becomings in contemplative and non-hierarchical dialogues with one another. As something happening in the process,  in intimate intimacy.

A becoming is neither one, or two, nor the relation of the two; it is the in-between, the borderline or line of flight… If becoming is a block (a line-block), it is because it constitutes a zone of proximity and indiscernability, a no-man’s land, a non-localizable relation sweeping up the two distant or contiguous points, carrying one into the proximity of the other - and the border-proximity is indifferent to both contiguity and to distance." Pythmenas (Greek word for ‘bottom of the ocean’) is a collaborative 3D audio installation work that took place at the Spatialization Lab of the Qualcomm Institute at the University of California, San Diego in May 2019.
 
Three distinct worlds interact to create a musical experience. The ocean sets the primary component of the triadic entity, inspiring the entirety of the artistic work. The sonic profiles from recordings of several of its living organisms (i.e. whales, dolphins, seals) made by scientists of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography are being interpreted by members (instrumentalists) of the overwater universe, who carry out a discussion following a line of instructions for improvisatory action. Technology, the last constituent, intervenes, capturing and processing the activity of the performers as well as manipulating the original recorded media.
 
The final outcome is the audio registration and fusion of the totality of layers projected and spatialized through an infrastructure of 28 spherically configured loudspeakers laid out in 4 levels; ground level - center (ring of 4), ear level - perimeter (ring of 12), 2 meters above ear level - perimeter (ring of 8), ceiling - center (ring of 4).

The work is influenced by the recording process of underwater sounds, in which the participation of the three worlds (i.e. ocean species, humans, technology) is necessitated.
