Meeting the Butterfly (world premiere by Theodore A. Vidal @PLU Pacific Lutheran University, Seattle, Washington) is a poignant and introspective work that explores the transformative power of memory and the human experience. This horn solo ( featuring James Gibson, accompanied by the piano, Jeff Orr ) is a deeply personal reflection on the composer's own experiences, inspired by the reunion with a beloved grandfather. 

The Butterfly, a symbol of transformation and renewal, represents the grandfather's spirit, which continues to inspire and guide. The music weaves a narrative of remembrance, evoking the emotions and sensations of a cherished encounter. Through the horn&#39;s rich, mellow tones, the composer conveys the complexity of emotions that arise when revisiting memories of loved ones. The piano accompaniment provides a subtle yet powerful framework, underscoring the intimacy and vulnerability of the encounter.

Meeting The Butterfly, For Horn & Piano

For Grade 5 

In a dramatic reversal of intergalactic expectations, an alien army descends upon Earth, propelled by an urgent mission to rescue humanity from the brink of self-annihilation. These mysterious guardians, afflicted by the demons of failed civilizations, have traveled the universe and seen the worlds that disregarded their warnings collapse catastrophically.

Instead of coming to conquer, aliens are here to prevent humanity from killing itself. These ghosts abduct one individual to travel beyond space after seeing numerous planets destroyed. By exposing the awful fate of other worlds who ignored their warnings, they implore Earth to change its ways.

Now, they have chosen a surprising hero to embark on a perilous yet educational journey across the remains of former worlds. "Earth is next," the alien's ominous word echoes through the void between the charred remains of Planet Halora and the ravaged terrain of Planet Dasili.

The selected messenger returns to a chaotic planet where humanity's future is at stake. As alien spacecraft pierce the heavens, the public is gripped by fear and suspicion. Despite insurmountable odds, he must persuade a divided Earth to come together and respond to the aliens' urgent call to action.

Returning to Earth, the selected messenger has to persuade a cynical world of the aliens' benign intentions upon their return to Earth. He must convince humanity to pay attention and take action before it's too late, as fear and mayhem break out with every extraterrestrial arrival.
