Spent is an exploration of deconstruction, abstraction, and assemblage of sounds to create a series of shifting spaces and contexts. Through the manipulation of a single sound source, I aimed to create a wealth of sound material with which I could piece together to create a new and evolving soundworld, with allusions to both real and abstract spaces and materials, free of all original context.

Hiraeth can be interpreted a homesickness for a time and place that exists only in one’s memory. A nostalgia that rears its head at unexpected moments, shifting shapes as contexts change and memories form new meanings.

Using the home as an allegory for hiraeth, sounds were selected for their capacity to draw forth strong personal memories. These materials are recontextualised as we venture through the living spaces, becoming tinged with new emotions and associations as the environment shifts around them, each transformation revealing the layers of nuances of hiraeth.

Shadows & Dust

This piece is an audio path, the musical / sonic experiences I have gained over the last 5 years studying in Corfu but also traveling the world. The piece develops concepts such as the journey, the transition, the passage and the idea of our instant existence in a natural or non-landscape. Following this idea, the piece projects scenes in different "spaces and places" others being presented by the sound horizon, others show up from the urban environment and others emerging from the underground.

A Space Journey

The inspiration for this piece came from the sounds of nature combined with those of modern industrial society. In addition to these, sounds of musical instruments were also incorporated. In particular, percussive sound-shapes are merged with buzz-like tones selected from original sound material recorded near beehives. The form of the project evolved along with the composition of the piece, and its development is based on the distinctive morphologies of these sounds. The piece is constructed as a multi-layered sound environment, within which intense sonic gestures are developed.
