From as far back as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated with space travel and wondering what lay beyond our solar system (as I’m sure many of you are too). I wanted to pursue Astrophysics for my undergraduate degree, and eventually managed to get a taste of the field during my Masters, through a short course on space technology and my work with the Square Kilometre Array project.

Earlier this year, I travelled to the the Karoo with two friends, which is home to the largest telescope in the southern hemisphere. We spent a night stargazing and exploring the observatory which houses the telescope. Simply put, it was one of the most breathtaking and inspiring experiences of my life! Being able to see galaxies with the naked eye and getting a glimpse of how vast the universe is, filled me with great hope and excitement about the future of space exploration. I’m a firm believer that mankind’s longterm survival depends on our ability to find another planet to call home, and I hope we’ll be able to witness the first genuine steps of that process in our lifetime.

I tried to capture the energy and childhood sense of wonder that I got from this trip with this song, and I hope you’ll all experience the same thing too! If you enjoy it, please get yourself a copy and spread the word. Ω
