This hybrid mix formed part of a recent research project exploring plant language and speculative sonic fictions :)

About the mix:

Plants have inhabited Earth for more than four-hundred-and-fifty million years, while humans have called this planet home for little more than seven million. Plants, with their collectively sustaining outlook, drawn from a wealth of ancestral knowledge - stored in winding, subterranean mycorrhizal networks - travel through time, but not in the linear sense: they are at once past, present and (thanks to their efficient, predictive capabilities) future. They are a reminder of, and a steady companion to, Earth’s long lifecycle. While their methods of communication may not be as visibly and sonically obvious as those of our own and our animal companions, plants have a fascinatingly plural language system - a complex, decentralised, multi-player network that Bio-17 attempts to sonify.

Bio-17, a name owing its form to Samuel Delany’s 1966 sci-fi novel, Babel-17 - a novel concerning interplanetary translation - is a collaborative, interspecies linguistic study. Through a spectrum of original and gathered, human and plant-made sounds - including arboreal field recordings, vocal samples, and processed biorhythmic data, all interwoven with tracks by other artists - I have explored the ways in which vegetal language systems might be decoded into music - using the medium's spatio-sensory capacities, and widely interpretable nature, to reflect a multiplicity of voices communicating within an interconnected whole.

She brings a DnB infused hour of delights plus lets us know a bit more about her influences and musical journey so far. Amsterdam's @zohar01 operates from the shadows. Though she has a reputation for mysteriousness, there is no escaping the earth-rattling rhythms she lays down in the DJ booth. Leftfield electronics, distorted vocals and industrial sounds with 90s roots all feature in her sets as well as productions on the likes of Clone and her own DIY Zohar label. This month she dropped the second entry in her highly personal ZHR series in the form of her Object album, a mix of sound experiments, glitchy textures and abstract rhythms. 

This week's mix is full of similar sonic sorcery and musical black magic. Squealing electronics and fizzing textures evoke feelings of dystopia as crunching drums come and go but the tension is never let up. There are moments of eye-watering density but, just as often, empty spaces leave you hanging before the next thrilling rhythm arrives and takes you somewhere new. Brain and body music rarely collide in such a unique fashion.

On the last two weekends of January 2023 we exchanged some mutual affection with Vitamin, our favorite music pit and the best crew from Brno. We decided to immortalise the two long nights with a few small doses of Vitamin A extracts – five recordings from events in Prague and Brno. 

First recording belongs to Skalm, who opened Planeta Za's floor on January 20.
