The opening track from Lab 2018 | The Rhythm of the Road is a Victor Lewis tune called "Hey, It's Me You're Talking' To!"

This arrangement is by our drummer John Sturino, and happens to feature the two youngest members of the band: 20-year-old saxophonist Will Nathman, and 19-year-old Gregory Newman on trumpet.

You'll appreciate how John's writing features each of the four sections of the band, but allows the entire ensemble to be hard at full force as well.

Seventh in a series of compositions written specifically for the One O’Clock Lab Band by professor Rich DeRosa, “Birds of a Feather…” is another shining example of Rich’s deep creativity and unbridled compositional technique. As always, the band rises to the challenge of his advanced writing and creates something truly special. You’ll hear from Kyle Bellaire on soprano saxophone, and once again, Paul Lees on the keys.

We decided to close the album introspectively. After the Rain is a John Coltrane composition arranged by Brandon Moore. For multiple reasons, not the least of which is a 10/8 time signature, this is truly a unique arrangement. It features Gregory Newman on flugelhorn, and baritone saxophonist Brendon Wilkins on flute. Just as a side note: I’ve been in front of professional big bands for almost 25 years, and I’ve never heard a flute sound as gorgeous as Brendon’s. This too is a very challenging chart to play, but the band totally rises to the occasion.
