Associated with Nyege Nyege, DJ Travella's freewheeling sound has risen up out of the Singeli scene, yet is influenced by global genres like Atlanta trap, rave and dembow. It's like hearing gabber, carnival dance and '90s jeep beat tracks playing on top of each other – and who wouldn't want that?

Tullia Benedicta’s experimental project NZIRIA reinterprets the neomelodic song, a type of Neapolitan musical style that originated in the 1970s revolving around the themes of class, crime, longing, and hardship. NZIRIA subverts the traditional tropes of neomelodica, and injects it with narratives of the LGBTQI+ community and singing of queer love and identity. In this mix, they share a range of their inspirations, from folklore to hardcore.

Following a @neversleeplife debut re-framing Neapolitan traditions through an avant-hardcore lens, Tullia Benedicta, AKA @nziriaa, jumps on the podcast series. 

Upending preconceptions of what the Southern Italian ‘neomelodic’ sound can be, ‘XXYBRID’ was a reclamation of Benedicta’s Neapolitan heritage; a collision of the traditional and hyper-contemporary while expelling any notions of cis-heteronormativity. In a way, this mix is an extension of those efforts.

“This mixtape opens and closes with two tracks relevant to Neapolitan culture, the first stemming from the alternative scene of left-wing occupied spaces, the second coming from Neomelodic tradition, the music of the working-class neighbourhoods in Naples in the 80s.  

My sound, not only when live but also in DJing, is a moment of hybridisation between opposites: North and South, modern and ancient, Hardcore and Tarantella. Clubbing has always been a constant since my adolescence, it has been a moment of personal formation for me because it wasn't just about going dancing, but above all a great moment of sociability.

That's why I find the power of dance important, at times ritualistic, just like a folk dance from southern Italy, and I find it interesting to mix sounds that are apparently distant but with the same strength, the same intensity that takes you to a higher state of consciousness.” – NZIRIA

The latest podcast sees Petrola 80 bosses @lyravalenza take a restrained approach while placing specific focus on their local Copenhagen scene.

A collaboration between longstanding friends Jens Konrad and Hjalte Lehman, the LV blueprint transcends genre. It’s day-glo rave ordnance that draws from eurodance, techno and the so-called hardcore continuum – nostalgic and undeniably fwd-facing at once.

Distilling the euphoria of their live sets into 8 distinct tracks, debut full-length ‘Low Gear No Pressure’ spanned everything from blissed ambience to precision-tooled breakbeats and trance-tinged jungle. Dipping into downtempo territory for the first time, it also represented a broadening of their already eclectic palette, and this mix certainly continues in that vein.
 
“Our recent DJ appearances and mixes have been hazy peak-hour sets, so here, we wanted to dive a little deeper and explore slower BPMs and tracks we rarely get the chance to play out, combined with tunes we usually play in the beginning of our sets. It’s also the first time we chose to work with a strict gender balance between the featured artists and producers. And as usual we focused on the booming Copenhagen scene, this time including local artists such as Gavnlig, Muskila, Capitana, DJ Paydar and Mbizo.” – Lyra Valenza

@preciousmetalsx founder @therealendgame, AKA “the devil himself”, in the building for the latest podcast.

Co-founding the now-defunct Bala Club to launching Precious Metals, the NTS mainstay is one of London’s foremost underground operators: a prolific producer, DJ and label owner that counts the likes of Kamixlo, Yayoyanoh and Organ Tapes among his closest peers and collaborators. 

Committed to platforming emerging artists, no stone is left unturned in his label’s pursuit of dysfunction and emotive-driven, genre-bending cross-pollination. It’s music that draws from the chaos of the urban complex; intense, visceral, sometimes nocturnal, and, on occasion, violent in the extreme.

And where his own productions straddle the line between severe electronics, drill abstraction and Latinx styles, this mix treads a similar path.

NYC scene figurehead and podcast contributor Ex Wiish keeps things horizontal with a 45-minute exercise in total immersion. 

We're gassed to have the 29 Speedway founder on board for this one. Something of a luminary in the Big Apple scene, the sound artist and composer has grown increasingly experimental with age, culminating in  a widescreen debut for Anthony Naples' Incienso label.

Where that album oscillated between windswept arrangements, lacerating IDM and downbeat styles, his mix taps into the same vein of transcendent, meditative experimentalism. 

“For this mix I wanted to feature tracks by some of the artists who have recently been involved with 29 Speedway on tour alongside music I’ve found inspiring as of late. Picks from Flora Yin Wong, Lauren Duffus, Yolabmi, Eric Frye, bod [包家巷], KMRU, Exael and some other favourites”. – Ex Wiish

As the brains behind a label constantly upending expectations and convention, the Lyon native has achieved cult status among discerning music heads. If you haven’t checked the POLAAR output, not to mention Flore’s own productions, you only have yourself to blame. It’s curation without compromise, defined by a voracious appetite for innovation.

Flexing a commitment to reckless abandon and clubwise experimentation, the mix treads a similar path. Bassbin accelerators and hardcore torque in abundance.

In a few days we are starting the celebration of the 10th anniversary of my POLAAR label with a party at the Machine du Moulin Rouge in Paris (one of the biggest we have ever organised).

It proved the perfect occasion to delve back into the archives and it was surprisingly pleasant to see how far we have come. It’s also an opportunity to think about the new creative directions we want to take in the years to come.
