AM: We loved your mix a lot, where and how did you record it? Was there a theme behind it?

Glad you liked it! I recorded the mix in my studio with a moody xone mixer and x2 xdjs on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. I’d say the theme is release. After the drag of a 9-5 week that sacred studio time on the weekends can be so special, especially with the current Montreal curfew. Channeling that ‘living for the weekend’ vibe here with some low-slung bass music I've been digging lately.


AM: We’re big fans of your label ISLA, how did it come about?

Thank you for listening! Isla was born out of a desire to document the music happening around me. I bought a used tape duplicator from a church in Abbotsford and started making very small tape runs of friends’. It’s grown a bit since but it's still just me putting whatever I’m excited about.


AM: We think Ambien Baby is fantastic, love Sophie too from when we had her down to play in Brighton, how did you guys come about forming the duo?

Oh thank you! That’s my best friend and soul sister. We’ve known each other since we were teens. AB is a reaction to our friendship and a vessel for us to explore sound & collaborate. 


AM: Out of music what are your interests? 

I'd say the interests are vast and ever-mutating!  In general, they lay in music rituals [music making/consuming], music’s therapeutic qualities, and its tireless research/ quest for its historicity.  


AM: Whats next for you this year? 

Finishing loose ends for some recording projects that have been in the works for some time, putting out some records im very excited about and learning how to tap/ dance flamenco.

Many moons ago our first cassette release of an artist’s original compositions was from 'The Only Thingz' - E Ruscha V’s biomorphic modular synth alter ego".

Now, The Only Thingz are back, yet this time both egos aligned in symbiotic unity. 

Recorded during the lockdown, the music was created at a time of stepping away from fast moving life and focusing more on the slower pace of simple home existence. Gardening, making fresh bread and making music was the order of the day and each day blurred into the next. 

The music itself is a more realized vision of the first Only Thingz offering which was perhaps the tadpole stage of the frog’s life, and now this frog is grown and sits and marvels at his surroundings while being at peace there, yet there can be ominous overtones at moments. Something lurking behind that old tree downstream perhaps?

While synthesizers feature heavily, the clarinet seems to be a floating guide through the proceedings giving the feeling of an environmental merge. Oceans waves, streams, plants, sun clearing the fog, walks in the hills and daydreams all converge in E Ruscha V and The Only Thingz Too.

Q. How would you describe yourself? (DJ, producer, artist, etc.)
A. I think ADAB is definitely more of an intention to be conjured then a singular moniker for a person. It’s an instance of exploring self/collective through an array of sounds from or influenced by cultures of color and the worlds they influence at large (which are quiet a few). It's also intended to be a direct expression of afrofuturism. A humble attempt to make sets and mixes made for emboldening and envisioning future instances of pan african and POC beauty in dance music.


Q. Any memorable club nights in NY? 
A. My latest memorable club night in NYC is also the last one I was able to spin live before everything shut down. I played Public Records alongside my dear friend CCL and it was a much needed gig/trip. We played a lot of drummy stuff we both love throughout the night and eventually ended on a Jungle/DnB note which was a dream to do with them. The crowd was super into it, outwardly showed love the entire time, and danced their asses off the whole time. It was a blast!


Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. I decided to finally explore a lot of my 90-100 bpm percussive stuff that I’ve accumulated over time for this one. Up until now almost all my mixes have been above or around 130 bpm so it was nice to slow it down and mess around with this section of my collection. Definitely intended to be a psychedelic hip churner! There's also a few dear homies like CCL, Flora FM, Ali Berger, & Russell E. L. Butler in here as well so big shouts to them for some of these lovely tracks <3 Enjoy!
