a. Hey 🌸 I’m Udda, Ukrainian dj based in Berlin, part of Bass Resistance collective.

q. is there a story behind the mix?
a. It took me a while to put this mix together. Sometimes, while selecting tracks, I wanted to make it more grounding, and other times, I leaned toward something more ethereal and far from the earth. In the end, I think it turned out to be some sort of dance between these two states. 

q. what’s the best way to enjoy your mix? 
a. On the train, heading home after insightful trip.

q. describe a favorite object in your living room...
a. A small Chinese clay teapot 🍵

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?
a. I’m helping friends to build a platform for electronic music artists  and fans. Hopefully soon we’ll share more about it.

Jake Muir is a Berlin based sound artist, DJ and field recordist. He approaches his practice as a listener first, carefully curating, layering and processing sounds that help him deconstruct and contextualize his lived experiences and influences. Using investigative software methodologies, DJ techniques and engineering dexterity, Muir makes deeply personal sonic art that fluidly traverses genre membranes, encouraging reflection and sometimes prompting psychedelic states.

This mix is essentially a studio distillation of the two DJ sets I played during bathing hours at Washington Baths in Portland, Maine last year, for @poolemusicltd. Beyond the aquatic aesthetics tying back to saunas and my time spent living in California and Seattle, it is also inspired by an essay I discovered while trying to find cover art for Bathhouse Blues. “Spiritual dimensions of self-transformation in Sydney’s gay bathhouses”, by Jason Prior and Carole Cusack, explores how gay bathhouses were viewed as places of worship by the patrons and what transpired there as being “rituals”. Given this backdrop, there are various references in the mix, both literal and figurative, to said dimensions associated with rituals and spirituality.

Mesmerising dance floor tapestries from a singular experimental musician.

Can you reinvent the human voice? The oldest musical instrument in existence, our voices are the foundation of music as we know it, and few push its limits in electronic music today like Lyra Pramuk. On her masterful debut, Fountain the Berlin-based, US-born artist's voice was the only instrument. No drums, no synths—just her voice warped, synthesized and layered to achieve orchestral-like electronics.

Five years on from her breakout, Pramuk's practice has steadily evolved, with a continued interest in ideas of folk and futurism, and how technology can enable us to build community beyond boundaries of time and space. There’s a holistic nature to her artistry, one that extends seamlessly into her DJing.

As she explains in the Q&A accompanying this week's RA Podcast, she sees her work as "part of a continuum of sacred, folkloric, and communal music represented by many different subcultures and communities across the world."

It's an approach that, like much of Pramuk's output, feels explicitly choral in nature. The first voice we hear on the mix comes from Lonnie Holley, his woozy Southern drawl calling out, "Earth will be there to catch us when we fall." (Although, you have to wonder, if we keep flogging the Earth, will it?) 

More voices follow across an eye-catching tracklist, from the poetry of friends (Nadia Marcus) to esoteric French chantresses from the ’80s (Anne Gillis), while Pramuk wraps an extensive amount of her own forthcoming material around tracks from SD Laika, Leyland Kirby, rRoxymore and 33EMYBW, to name just a few.

By the end, voice and noise become indistinguishable—stammering, glitchy vocals colliding with an orchestra of instruments. The effect is mesmerising.

Unfolding as one continuous composition, RA.979 exists somewhere between an ambient set at Kwia and the main stage at Unsound, voices and textures blurred into a fluid tapestry of sound. It's a singular offering to the series from a singular artist.

@meze’s ‘Porder’ is but one offering from ‘All Watched Over By Machines of Loving Grace’, and its intricate, rapid movement slowly gets underway after a forceful, pulsing bass inaugurates the track's grand beginning. This guttural sound eventually proves to lay the foundations for an authentically trance-inducing mechanised melody, giving further legitimacy to Meze’s appearance on a compilation with such an evocative title as this.

For the third instalment of “Cowboys And The Sounds Of,” an Editorial mix series from longtime contributor @napmusick , we’re treated to the sounds of sad country music and trains passing by. The combination is unexpectedly heart-wrenching, as if the sound of trains bring us back to an era of long goodbyes and far distances. Three years in the making, Rincon’s two hour collection of cosmic country and folk is a testament to the enduring heartbreak and beauty of the genre. 

Daniel Rincon makes music under the moniker @napmusick ,  is one half of Ambein Baby and La Fe, and runs an experimental electronic label @sonidoisla out of Montreal.
