I’m not saying… I love you That phrase got tired, or maybe lost I said it once, maybe twice, maybe daily And I’ve paid the price You needed a gesture Not a mouth full of air But how do you act on something so fragile

 I’m not saying I love you though you probably already knew It’s tucked in my jokes, in the food that I cook In the mess that I made and the time that you took

I’m not about to say “I love you” now I’ve tried that line—it didn’t land somehow I whispered it in verse, I sang it bold But all I got was silence, damp and cold So now I hum and bow, and take a bow

That phrase is a trap,
Like slipping on honey
Or hugging a map
It’s stitched in my sweater
It’s stuck in my shoe

I’ve swallowed the words, they were starting to rot
