Over four tracks the ‘Hydrosphere EP’ continues the label’s narrative of platforming contemporary antipodean psychedelia with three masterful productions and a remix from Boorloo/Perth’s Hame DJ.

As a producer with influences rooted in dub, street soul, boogie and the DNA of UK club music, Ryan draws down on the Middy T sound with the title track ‘Hydrosphere’, a blend of broken machine funk, glistening synth lines and beautiful crisp drum programming. ‘Rain Vibe’ takes the sound palette further adding a hefty wub for good measure. ‘Catamaran’ transports us back to the golden era on the Balearic isles, with the original evoking Ibizan sunset cruises whilst Hame DJ’s remix brings some Madchester chug to the mix.

"Hey...Thanks all for the nice comments.....so glad people are still enjoying something I put together nearly 20 years ago.....

Here's a little story about it I wrote last year...... Don't want to sound like I'm blowing my own trumpet here, but just wanted to offer an insight into what went into making this album. I'd been working at North America's largest 12" singles distributors for around 6-7 years and noticed a lot of really good stuff was slipping through the cracks Seemed the only place some of this stuff was getting played was after shows or clubs back at my apartment in Chelsea. 

The whole idea of doing a comp came on a road trip in Northern California to Reno and Tahoe. I'd provided a ton of mixtapes for the rental convertible Sebring we were giving a good thrashing and it all seemed to work. 

Back in NY a few months later we devised the plan and a tentative tracklist. I figured most labels would help out, as we had been distributing their stuff for years and there was really no other outlet in the US for the music aside from us and a few other wholesalers. Letters were sent to the labels concerned and most looked at the tracklist and wanted in. There was one holdout, a label called Svek in Sweden, who said they were on too many compilations. We mailed them a copy of the final product, and they immediately replied saying they wanted in on any future projects. All the others were happy to be involved and gave us a pretty good rate on the licensing fees. 

We did 2 versions, CD mixed by Dave Micalizzi and for the vinyl we chose a few sought after tracks that were no longer in print and were still in demand. We signed a distribution deal with a Warners offshoot for CD distribution and handled the vinyl ourselves at Watts. Once the final tracklist was confirmed, sequenced and mixed it was time for a road test. 

We headed back to San Francisco to do a bit of business and see a few people and this time we rented a brand new Jaguar. After a few days of doing our best Karl Malden and Michael Douglas impressions on the hills in SF we grabbed a couple of locals and took a trip out to this posh restaurant out in Napa Valley called Tre Vigne, flaunting the open container and various drug laws along the way. 

About half way there Dave spotted a lookout perched above a dam and took the opportunity to start spinning donuts in the dust. We'd left the windows down and the whole fucking car filled up with dust. We pulled into the parking lot at Tre Vigne filled with luxury automobiles and here was us,dusting all the shit that landed on us spinning donuts in the dust in a Jag covered in shit and showing the approximate 4 grand we had done in damage jumping it on the hills in SF.(Always remember to get the insurance on rental cars you plan to trash kids).

I remember the waitress purposely sitting us outside and when asked what sort of beer they had the first thing out of her mouth was "Lunatic Lager" which seemed rather fitting Back to NY after the road test got a big thumbs up it was on to production and release. It came out in 1999 and took a lot of people by surprise, as there was nothing like it around at that time. 

Reviews were favourable in some of the larger mags Billboard etc and a good buzz was built up. I got interviewed by the online edition of Rolling Stone (in its infancy then) and a few other nationwide publications. All in all we shifted around 25000 on both formats worldwide and I still get asked about it to this day."

Eric @Cloutier on the inspiration for this mix: "It's impossible to fully describe the importance of Theorem (@theorem-thx) in my life. Upon first hearing the “Nano” album I was immediately sold on his sound. Moving artfully between psychedelic, dub and chill varietals of techno, the picture he painted on this full length on Plus8 blew my mind…and honestly still does. Fast forward to the “Mantra One” EP, and I knew this wasn’t a fluke but a revolution of a genre. Almost like clockwork, singles on a sub label of M_nus started dropping; I was indoctrinated in to Theorem's sound 100% at this point. Beautiful, patient, delicate, unique, and timeless - Theorem’s records, both solo and with a handful of equally amazing friends, such as Stewart Walker, Sutekh, and Swayzak, are at once undefinable and unquestionably from one defining point in electronic music history. I’ve been fortunate enough to stay friends with Theorem for well over a decade, and he’s blessed me with a trove of unreleased transmissions I’ve never felt comfortable putting to a recording until now. Without this music  I honestly don’t know where my techno life would have taken me, but I am forever indebted to Theorem for what he unintentionally did to a random connoisseur back home in Detroit.
