Up on the Street (Swede Hollow)” tells a bit of the tale of an immigrant community that settled in an inner-city hollow in St. Paul, Minnesota, in the mid 1800s. The area was a shanty-town below street level, inhabited first by Swedish immigrants, but also Irish, Mexican and other communities over the century it existed. The dream for many in Swede Hollow was to make it “up on the street” and out of the hardscrabble living conditions below. At its peak in the early 1900s, about 1,000 people lived in Swede Hollow. In 1956, the City of St. Paul evicted the remaining 14 families and burned down the homes in Swede Hollow, calling the area a health hazard. Today, it is a park. The track features lead vocals by The Other Hit’s Carla Tollefsrud. The track also features guest drummer Harry C. Wilkinson Jr. Harry is heard on the radio every day on his brilliant drumming on Michael Martin Murphey’s 1975 hit “Wildfire.”
