Here's the opening track of WILDERNESS & SPIRIT, "KATAHDIN (GREATEST MOUNTAIN)," and it is a knockout, beautiful throwback to a more traditional scoring style and, at nearly 13 minutes, it is one of the most sumptuous pieces of orchestral music that I've heard in a long while. There are a few Native American flavored ethic songs, but most of the music on the 54:30 CD is pleasant and features plenty of soaring strings, accompanied by sections of brass and solo guitar or piano, while other songs will sometimes have a folksy and near New Agey sensibility to them. The highpoint to the CD is, again, the opening 13 minute track, "KATAHDIN (GREATEST MOUNTAIN)," which can be listened to at the link below and in it's entirety.

If you like your music big, bold, sweepingly good and in the vein of composers like James Horner, Alan Silvestri, John Scott or Basil Poledouris, then you likely won't be disappointed.

Here is the Chubby Checker version of the ATARI DIG DUG song that was suppose to be featured in the Clio Award winning commercial that came out in 1983 and was shown in theaters nationwide. I haven't been able to uncover why it wasn't exactly used (replaced by an unrecognizable band playing the song in the actual commercial), so if anyone knows, please share.

This short, under 2 minute, piece of music works phenomenally well in the trailer for the Norwegian mocumentary, 'TROLL HUNTERS', and has just the right amounts of tongue-in-cheek epic adventure score, mixed in with a building march that easily conveys a formidable sense of dread and impending doom. It works so fantastically that I'm almost saddened that the filmmaker's didn't actually hire King to write a similar sort of score to fit the finished film. Something a little different today, so bare with me. There is little focus on songs that are used in documentary films, so this a slight departure from my usual posts that are about their scores. So, if you're at all interested, read on and, more importantly, listen. :)

FINALLY! The soundtrack to one of the all-time greatest ski films ever made, director Greg Stump's "LICENSE TO THRILL", is here! Well, kind of. The film, itself, is a dynamic synthesis of the ski action cinematography of Greg Stump and the gravity defying skiing of Scot Schmidt, Glen Plake, Kevin Andrews, Mike Hattrup, Kim Reichhelm, and many others, all of whom look like superheroes here. 

For fans of this film and, indeed, Stump's other celebrated ski films, like "THE BLIZZARD OF AHHH'S" (1988) or "GROOVE: REQUIEM IN THE KEY OF SKI" (1991), the music has always been one of the biggest draws for how memorable and impactful the the ski sequences are. There's no doubting it, that when Stump came on the scene in the mid 80's, and with films that were powered by a musical cluster of 80's Euro sensation, pumped up grooves, scratches and a fusion of rhythm induced tracks from celebrated music producer Trevor Horn and his own label ZTT (Zang Tumb Tumb), ski films would never be the same. 

Since then, fans have be clamoring for some kind of official soundtrack, but one has never materialized. The tracks that are presented here were taken from a promotional soundtrack cassette that was manufactured when the film was released on video. One of the draws for anyone directly ordering the VHS tape through Stump's own company, which one had to actually call on the phone, as there was no internet ordering at the time, was that they received, at no additional cost, one of these limited edition promo soundtracks with their order. That was the only way to have received the soundtrack... so... until there's an official release - or until anyone ask me to take this down - here you go.   

Like extreme skier Glenn Plake says in the opening scene of this film, and I'm sure that you'll agree, "This is a license to thrill."  Enjoy! :)

Enjoy a sampling of composer Randy Miller's beautifully haunting and emotive score to the Todd Robinson documentary, 'AMARGOSA' (1999). The film centers on aging dancer-choreographer Marta Becket and her journey from the bustling ballet crowds of New York to the dry desolation of California's Death Valley, where she crafted her one-woman show at the soon to be historic Amargosa Opera House. Randy's somber and pensive score perfectly sets the scene of discovering the soul of an artist through her fall and, eventual, rise to solo sold-out shows. Thoughtfully integrated throughout the score are the distant and soulful vocals of singer/song writer Amy Nicole Cook. Her inclusion in the music is utilized to create a nuance of lost youth, as its haunting and gossamer like textures serves as a reminder of an aging Marta Becket's escaped past. It filters itself in layers throughout the score as a way to convey maybe something ageless in our character's personality and, ultimately, her quest to rediscover her passions for ballet and theater. Rounding out the suite, I've also included Amy's heartfelt song "She Dances On", which I feel was the perfect way of stating that the film's character had finally found a way to reclaim her youthful spirit. Say the word 'Shark' out loud and it seems to only conjure up rows, upon endless rows, of jagged serrated teeth fixed to the ultimate face of indifference and one that shows no mercy when it comes to feeding time.  There is also little doubt that people don't hear John Williams' iconic and very terrifying music from 'JAWS' (Da-dum. Da-dum. Da-dum da-dum da-dum da-dum daaaaaaaa.)Its refreshing, then, that British composer Jennie Muskett, in the 1995 documentary, 'GREAT WHITE SHARK', decided to play against this common approach to Sharks as being nothing more that thoughtless and unremorseful eating machines.
