
Now heres a thought?  What if I told there is a country where 5.8m people suffering from food poverty, cannot afford gas and electricity, and are being placed at greater risk by government cuts to the public purse.  What if I also told you that the country in question wastes enough food to feed those suffering from food poverty and is the worlds 7th largest economy.

Sounds familiar?  Well thats probably because the country in question is the UK and with the reported number of people who suffer from food poverty alarmingly on the rise - whilst the amount of food being wasted also on the up - what can be done to square the circle?

To discuss these issues and more I've travelled to the Deptford offices of FareShare and am joined by its CEO Lindsay Boswell.  Lindsay is passionate about fighting hunger and food waste in the UK. He has 22 years senior management experience in the voluntary sector having worked in youth development with Operation Raleigh and The Princes Trust and was previously Chief Executive of the Institute of Fundraising.

Welcome to the Sharing TV podcast and in tis podcast we're discussing one of the worlds fastest growing technology companies.  Now even if you have a passing interest in what is termed the sharing economy you will no doubt have heard of Uber Technologies; the San Fran based tech start up founded in 2010 by serial entrepreneur Travis Kalanick already boasting offices in 74 cities with 600 employees and counting.  

Uber was recently valued at over 3.5 Billion dollars, is backed by heavyweight investors such as Google Ventures and the founder of Amazon Jeff Bezos and is posting revenues in excess of 200 million dollars a year.  Thats right; a tech company that actually makes money!

So what exactly is Uber, why is their so much excitement around the company and what are its plans for the future?

Well to help answer these questions and more I travelled to the London offices of Uber and was joined by Jo Bertram who is Uber's General Manager in London having previously with both McKinsey and Accenture.

In this unique podcast I leave the comfort of the offices I normally frequent and head out on the streets of London with Uber; the billion dollar app that provides 'everyones private driver'.

Having just interviewed Uber London's General Manager - Jo Bertram - I then hop into an UberLux (in this case a stretched black Audi A8) and am greeted by my private driver Rizwan from Romania.  Suited and booted - looking the consummate chauffeur - Rizwan refers to me as 'Sir', opens the back door for me and places my bag in the boot.

So far so good...but how does he really feel about driving for Uber and who does he tend to pick up?

Now hands up anyone who owns designer branded clothing that they haven't worn in over 3 months…thats most of you right?  

If you take a step back and think about it it just doesn't make sense…many of us work hard to earn a living during a time of great economic uncertainty, we get taxed, we then spend a large chunk of that on say an expensive pair of shoes we don't really need but really want only to wear them 2 or 3 times and leave then in the cupboard gathering dust.

This culture of acquisition or ownership also has serious consequences as the increased global demand for newly manufactured clothing at competitive prices has led to poorer pay for labourers and the absence of health and safety measures right across the textile industries global supply chain not to mention the obvious environmental impact.

Here to discuss these issues and more I'm joined by Fiona Designi who is the Founder of Rentez-vous.com; a sharing economy technology start-up based in London that encourages people to rent rather than buy clothes.

It a concept that has been around for many years but a combination of an economic recession and the ubiquitous nature of social networking has given people the drive and the connections by which they can consider an alternative to the socio-economic status quo.

Is time baking simply a reaction to the current economic climate which will fade away once we are back on track or does it represent the long term future of value exchange and banking?
