I stared into my own eyes. The bathroom mirror offered no story—only a duplicate of myself. I resembled my father, a likeness I wanted no part of. All I really wanted was to capture my mother’s features: to let her smile settle on my mouth, to keep my skin like hers, to overturn my father’s image once and for all. Yet I couldn’t push past these tasteless eyes, these impure, insignificant retinas.
With toothpaste I traced my name on the glass, but it felt borrowed, not mine. I spoke it aloud, faster and louder, until the syllables frothed into meaningless sound and my guttural voice fizzled out. I wiped the mirror clean. The reek of urine made my stomach twist, as did the sight of my naked, sweat-slick body. No shower could wash away such disgust.
I wanted a mind less congested, to stop thinking about all this. Why was I even standing there? Was I truly trying to piece my family back together? Deep inside, a hostile hydra writhed in my gut, and I felt ashamed of the solitude coiled within me. I longed to drain every drop of this poison from my body—emptying myself, leaving nothing behind.
