'We Are Time' is an exploratory version of one of The Pop Group's most anthemic rallying agitations, taken from 'Cabinet Of Curiosities', a nine-track compilation described by Mark Stewart as equivalent to a lost Pop Group album. 

The compilation opens with the fractured future-funk single ‘Where There’s A Will’, originally released as a double A-side shared with The Slits in 1980, and described by Sager [guitarist] as “The group’s best attempt to mix a message with a groove plus some real free playing. If you are really unhinged you may be able to dance to this.” Next up is the unheard, original Andy Mackay (Roxy Music) produced version of ‘She Is Beyond Good And Evil’, probably the band’s most infamous song and famously covered by St Vincent on the Jimmy Fallon show and throughout her Strange Mercy tour.

Cabinet Of Curiosities continues with previously unreleased songs ‘Abstract Heart’ and ‘Karen’s Car’, and other alternative versions. Of ‘Karen’s Car’, recorded in Finland, Sager recalls “appropriately our final stand with just Stewart, Sager, Smith and Waddington left. This is the sound of paranoia, groove and noise at its height. There was nowhere left to go”.

The Pop Group formed in Bristol in 1977 out of a sense of disenchantment with the increasing conservatism of punk.
Drawing on an eclectic range of influences from free jazz, conscious funk, heavyweight dub to avant-garde experimentalism, alongside contemporaries like Public Image Limited, This Heat and Throbbing Gristle, they were at the forefront of a musical period marked out by its ground-breaking innovation.

Their original missives, which Mark Stewart describes as “an index of possibilities”, still explode with an incandescent spirit and energy, possibilities expanded upon by recent live tours in Japan, America, Australia and the UK and the band's first studio album in 35 years, 'Citizen Zombie'.

Post punk provocateurs The Pop Group announce their first single Mad Truth from their new album, Citizen Zombie.  

The single is taken from the 11-track album, produced by the multi Grammy and Academy award winning producer Paul Epworth and is released through Freaks R Us on Monday February 23rd 2015.

The album, features original members Mark Stewart (lyrics / vocals), Dan Catsis (bass), Gareth Sager (guitar) and Bruce Smith (drums).

Post punk provocateurs The Pop Group have announced details of the first single Zipperface from their forthcoming new album.  A fractured dub technoid vision, it finds the band channeling the current whilst remaining faithful to past principles. 

Mark Stewart’s cryptic reflections on the track:
‘Dangerous Days / The War For Tomorrow Has Begun / Death To Distraction’

The single is taken from the 10 track album produced by dub titan Dennis Bovell, who worked on their seminal debut Y, and Hank Shocklee, producer of Public Enemy’s iconic first three albums as a member of the Bomb Squad.

Honeymoon On Mars is set for release through Freaks R Us on Friday October 28th 2016. 

With Honeymoon On Mars The Pop Group open another chapter at a time when their iconoclastic contention is needed now more than ever. It’s a record that finds the band unwaveringly incensed and resolute in their mutative sense of innovation, as Stewart elaborates: ‘it’s a stand against manufactured hate, a hypersonic journey into a dystopian future full of alien encounters and sci-fi lullabies’

Recorded and mixed in various studios in early summer of 2016, working with Bovell and Shocklee the band realised a dream twofold collaboration, as Stewart concludes: “We’ve at last fulfilled a double fantasy to work with our two favourite sonic assassins, Dennis ‘Blackbeard’ Bovell and Hank Shocklee.  We’re in awe as Dennis, the Captain Kirk of dub is taking us on a hyper sound voyage into the future, and Hank, as always tears up the rules totally upholding our faith in the absolute value of noise.  We’ve gone completely off the map.”

Talking about working with The Pop Group, Shocklee said: "The Pop Group sound has a level of freedom, fun and creative musicianship in their recordings that is a special and rare find in today's world. Their uncompromising spirit to be themselves and not worry about fitting into a musical box, sets them apart.”

Long-time collaborator Bovell added: “It’s been a great pleasure to be working with the guys again. They are truly beyond good and evil.” 

The Pop Group will be performing a rare stint of dates across Europe this November with dub maestro and producer Dennis Bovell at the controls.

North Carolina based producer and Tri Angle Records lynchpin Brandon Juhans aka Hanz has produced a special ‘Reducer Dub’ remix of The Pop Group’s first single Zipperface from their upcoming new album Honeymoon On Mars. 

Incorporating elements of sound collage and hip hop – including the “wall of sound” technique he absorbed through early masters like Hank Shocklee - Hanz first emerged with a brace of free download zips in the early 2010s and has since carved out a distinctive identity amongst Tri Angle’s idiosyncratic new breed. His first release for the label, ‘Reducer’, purveyed a diverse fusion of industrial prang, cavernous dub and turbulent punk energy and was included in All Music’s Best Albums of 2015. In the same year he played the labels 5th year anniversary showcase alongside Evian Christ, Forest Swords, and Bjork.  

His Zipperface remix represents the culmination of a longstanding admiration for The Pop Group. It sees Hanz contorting the discordant thrust of Zipperface into a haunting reduction that testifies to a mutual instinct for collisional intensity.

Japan’s very own ‘Sound Originator’ Takeaki Maruyama aka Goth-Trad has produced a monumental remix of The Pop Group’s first single Zipperface from their new album Honeymoon On Mars

An indispensable ringleader in Tokyo’s dubstep scene and a prolific proponent of raw dubwise futurism Goth-Trad released his first solo record in 2004. After supporting The Mars Volta on their Japanese tour the same year, he followed his promising debut with the eclectic experimentations of 2005’s 'Mad Raver’s Dance Floor', a record which scored him international success with the enduring early dubstep classic 'Back to Chill'. His fourth European tour in 2006 saw him link up with Mala of Digital Mystikz at the seminal dubstep night FWD>> and a subsequent appearance on the renowned Deep Medi Musik label represented a watershed moment. A flurry of releases on the likes of Skud Beats and Soul Jazz Records as well as appearances at DMZ and support from The Bug, Kode9 and Mary Anne Hobbs subsequently established his place in the continuum of contemporary bass music.  

On his reworking of Zipperface, Goth-Trad takes the original into infernal depths and draws out oppressive levels of tension infusing Dennis Bovell’s prior mixing desk manipulations with sparse soundsystem brutality.

One of the more prominent personalities to emerge on Powell’s Diagonal Records, Alessio Natalizia aka Not Waving has produced a relentless acid refix of The Pop Group’s first single 'Zipperface' from their new album 'Honeymoon On Mars'

Hailing from Italy but now based in London, Natalizia has been operating under the Not Waving guise since 2013, clocking up an impressive series of self-released cassettes and LPs on his own Ecstatic Recordings imprint. As well as applying himself to a continuing evolution in his own music, Natalizia has also displayed a specialist interest in obscurities from the 80s underground. This interest culminated in the 2013 release of 'Mutazione: Italian Electronic & New Wave Underground 1980-1988', an acclaimed compilation of proto-industrial and primitive electronic music that completely reset the consensus on Italian music in the 1980s. Whilst maintaining a strong release schedule on Ecstatic (Pye Corner Audio, Gavin Russom, The Tapes, Daniele Ciullini and more) this year Natalizia perfected Not Waving’s calling card with 'Animals', an LP that alternated between and often combined liminal ambience, industrial amplitude and incisive, malfunctioning body music. 

On the back of touring America with the Diagonal Records crew Not Waving completes a trilogy of Pop Group remixes after contributions from Hanz and Goth-Trad. Like Hanz and Goth-Trad it comes from a place of enduring respect for The Pop Group’s daring experimentalism. Yet unlike the efforts of Hanz and G-T, Zipperface isn’t led into shadowy echo chambers or sub-bass assault but carved up and weaponised into a barrage of convulsive computer glitch, muscular EBM and thuggish acid.
