Regular readers of tQ might remember that our friends at MUTEK helpfully had someone handy with a tape recorder to capture Factory Floor's comeback set at the 2024 edition of the festival. Well, we're happy to report that they've done done the same again, this time with one of our favourite collaborative duos – James Holden and Wacław Zimpel. The intense, beautiful and burbling set, with modular synths and saxophone dancing in all the bright ecstasy of a winter mountain stream, can be listened to on our Soundcloud below.  " i remember i really enjoyed this one, it was the first show we'd had for a little while and felt quite flowy, a nice connected feeling," reflected James Holden, and his musical partner agrees: "I really loved it," Wacław Zimpel says, "it's always quite amazing to play again after longer break. Breaks gives a room for new ideas to grow spontaneously." They both praise preceding sets by Yu Su and Valentina Magaletti for setting "a great vibe at the venue," as Zimpeł puts it. It came on top of a fine stay in Montreal for the festival. "We immersed ourselves in the local cuisine – poutine – and then climbed the big hill. at the top a guy with a fluorescent cargo bike and a poodle in (also fluorescent) ankle warmers turned up, pumping 90s house out of a Bluetooth speaker. We felt like we'd completed Canada, achievement unlocked."

JD Twitch - 1987 Reimagined (30-Year Anniversary Mix)

In 2016 ATLAS Arts, in partnership with Artangel, brought Bethan Huws’ film Singing for the Sea (1993) to the Isle of Skye. Huws’ film documents a group of eight Bulgarian women, the Bistrista Babi, who Huws invited to travel from their home in the heart of Eastern Europe to the edge of an island, to the north east coast of England. She then asked the women to sing to the North Sea.

This film installation marked the start of A Work for the North Atlantic, a year-long programme of commissions, exhibitions and workshops exploring singing and the sea. As part of this ATLAS commissioned a new piece of work by Richard Skelton.

Skelton has created a multi-channel composition that evokes Huws’ work and its re-sited presentation in the Scorrybreac boathouse, Portree. He has turned his attention to the west, from the North Sea to the North Atlantic. Exploring traditional songs, field recordings, and inspiration from the landscape of Skye, its seascape and the stories that accompany them, Eilean Fuinn suggests that the sea and the landscape are "endlessly singing to each other" over the vastness of geological time.

Salm: Volume One, from which this track is taken, documents a form of religious singing practiced in Lewis, a form that reaches back to a time when the congregation could not be expected to be able to read. Instead, a ‘precentor’ leads the singing, which the congregation then follow by listening. The result is a surging sound, that swoops and falls around the church spaces as people follow those next to them, voices moving like the murmurations of birds. These recordings of Gaelic psalm singing are among the best ever captured, sung by one of the largest congregations to have ever been recorded.  

This style of singing is called free heterophony, and these recordings were spontaneous and totally unrehearsed. They were originally made over two evenings in the Back Free Church on the Isle of Lewis in October 2003, organised by Calum Martin and the Bethesda hospice in Lewis. The original CD was released through Bethesda hospice on Lewis, and a portion of the profits go back to the hospice, honouring the original recording.

The First track from My Disco's forthcoming new album Environment is premiering with The Quietus. On the record, the group say: "Environment was written and recorded in the space of a month at AndereBaustelle in Berlin, during the winter of ’18. With no preconceived ideas and next to no discussion before we all met there, I think the album is quite a concise musical exploration for us, embracing the confines of the space and our immediate surroundings. At times it feels like an extension or sequel to ‘Severe’. It’s just darker, at times violent, but overall it feels like an ambient record.  Boris Wilsdorf (Einstürzende Neubauten) engineered the recording. His freedom and experimentation in the studio is like no one else we’ve worked with before. It was perfect. We spent the first two weeks writing, which I think at the end of we had around 20 or so track ideas. We scrapped most, and ended up with the 8 that now shape the album. We later mixed Environment with Cornel Wilzcek in Melbourne. His touch and understanding of our sound is just mind blowing. He’s the silent fourth member of MY DISCO" 

Environment is released on Regis' Downwards Records this spring.
