The Visitors EP is a transcendent tour of Flour’s auditory cosmos and fascinating inner world, essential for all lovers of hard techno’s trancier moments, it finds itself perfectly at home in EXHALE’s cutting edge catalogue.

Kicking off the EP, which he describes as ‘a four-track journey exploring identity and transformation’ is the darkly beguiling ‘Mystery Land’, where pummeling kicks and trancey pads take us into hyperspace as we are drawn into ‘the discovery of an unknown dimension’. On title track ‘Visitors’ we go deeper still as Flour invites us to ‘encounter one’s own alter ego’: driving rhythms are offset with haunting operatic vocals, intense building synths and a broodingly urgent break building tension as a voice warns of ‘system failure’. Powerful peaktime gear. Next up is single ‘The World Beyond’, a transcendent fusion of hard techno and psytrance for the depth of the rave. Melodic beeps over a fiercely propulsive kick erupt into squelchy acid textures and we are catapulted into the dark mystery beyond. Dancefloors from Berlin to Napoli will go hard for this one. The closing chapter of this epic sonic journey is delivered by ‘Eternals’, ‘a timeless, introspective echo’ that invites us to consider the ‘other side’ as a limitless space within. Trancey and pumping, haunting vocal samples and pads give the track an ethereal edge, while the constancy of the kick keeps our feet on the ground (and moving).

The Journey EP50

While on a recent holiday in Germany Christian managed to sneak away from his family a few times and made two tracks with Eric Sneo. 'Line of Descent' is an E-Dancer Detroit inspired melodic affair. Lush strings, analog synths, and a phat bassline carry this track forward. 'Ride The Waves' is a relentless, shuffled peak time track. Chicago legend DJ Rush was on the vocals while Christian and Eric built an infective groove around it.

When it feels like everything is crumbling down around me, nothing can hold me together and lift me up the way that making music can. Nothing can connect me with spirit and purpose the way that creating something from nothing does. Making music creates pathways for connection and community too. It may be harder and more rare for us to be together physically right now, but when we are listening to the same music, we are weaving an undeniable connection with each other. Daring techno figure Drumcomplex has been keeping busy, despite the current universal club hiatus. Cooped up in the studio, where no one but his close collaborators could enter, he has concocted his 3th album, consisting of eleven original tracks out Nov 13th on his @complexed-records imprint. It’s a release that shows off his well-rounded, calculated style, bearing the typical Drumcomplex imprint, while incorporating more recent influences.

Long time friend and melodic techno aficionado Frank Sonic makes two appearances, first one on the intro track, a more melancholic starter to an otherwise upbeat slew of tracks. Later on, as we’re taken through intricate yet straightforward cuts like 'Universe' and 'The Heat', he makes his mark on Deeply Anchored, an ethereal vocal-centered dreamy pad-heavy journey. We also encounter a collaboration with Ben Champell, a more heavy-hitting, ready for the floor cut. At over seven minutes, title track 'The Story Of Now' is the LP's epic centrepiece, with subtle hints of breaks and an array of contagious percussion and metallic synths. While all tracks can be defined as techno, the producer’s sound design chops are evident, considering the variety of soundscapes we’re taken through track by track. A great example is 'Running Funky', who, albeit using an eponymous vocal loop, demonstrates Drumcomplex’ ability to also get very, very groovy. 

The LP is rounded off however in true Complexed style with club-primed weapons such as 'Cook' or 'Surrender' with Uncertain from Vienna, that spell late night havoc. All in all, an enjoyable release both for at-home listening as well as in-club use, reaching far and wide into the realm of techno with rowdy rave capabilities and intricate melodies.
