He said “Blessed are the poor,” and they called Him weak
Broke bread with sinners, kissed ‘em on the cheek
He flipped them tables, stood up for the least
Preached love over law and mercy over peace

“Turn the other cheek” that’s what He said
“Love your enemies” 
they’d rather see ‘em dead
Rode a donkey in, not a throne or crown
Still they say He’d vote red if He came to town

Jesus was a liberal, plain as day
Fed the hungry, gave His heart away
He healed the sick, never asked their name
Hung with outlaws, took all the shame
“Do unto others”, that’s the hill He died
Washed dirty feet, never took a side
So don’t tell me He’d be part of your crew
Jesus was a liberal, through and through

He said “Let the children come,” not build a wall
Forgave the thief, didn’t judge at all
Called out the preachers who wore gold and pride
Gave the keys of heaven to the ones denied

“What you do to the least of these…”
“You do to Me”, He said it with ease
But grace ain’t clean, and love ain’t safe
And kindness sure don’t win elections these days

Jesus was a liberal, truth be told
Broke the rules that kept the broken cold
He lifted women, pardoned the damned
Took the nails with open hands
“Forgive ‘em, Father”
that’s how He prayed
While the system mocked the price He paid
So if your church don’t preach what He’d do
Jesus was a liberal… just not like you
