His Promo Only/ Rong edit label shares credit for bringing the 1990s disco edit mania to the United States.  His All Night Rong parties in NYC with DJ Harvey and other seminal DJ’s remain the stuff of legend...

In addition to being some of the most fun party music of all time Hip-House really helped the sound of House music cross over to a much larger audience. Outside of Chicago, Detroit, and New York the new sound of house music was a pretty hard sell in the 80's and Hip House brought this phenomenon to the mainstream clubs across the world and helped bridge the gap that developed between hip hop culture and disco/house that grew further at the tail end of disco through the dawn of house music. This music wasn't meant to change the world or peoples perception, it was just made to make you dance! These same tunes that I played at clubs between 88-91 are as fun and vibrant as ever... So now I invite you to dance and party down...

This is an old one, but a good document of what I was into at this time. Recorded some time in 1993 in the San Francisco Bay area. 
Transferred from original Maxell XL-lls master cassette.
Organic was a slightly smaller more intimate party from the creators of Funky Techno Tribe, one of SF's early big Rave parties. SF style funky breaks seemed to be the order of the day...

I'm not sure if this flyer was for this same edition of the party as the recording.

This is a DEEP one for sure. Recorded from 7:00-9:16am at the Gathering's annual Freedom party. A little rough around the edges but it was after 7am. Beautiful, psychedelic, outdoor party in the Northern California wilderness.

Happy Valentines Day!!! This one actually had two vinyl releases. One on our Thick as Thieves 2xLP on the Idjut Boys mighty NOID label then again on Rong Music's "Promo Only" label on the VD EP. 

'Lectric Love  (Thick As Thieves Edit)

DJ Spun mixtape from 1994. Funky breaks, rong speed jungle, San Francisco rave sound. This was one of the most popular mixes of this era. Bootlegged with the title Funk U. on the East coast. This tape was duped, traded and shared by the old school ravers all across America. Originally recorded in San Jose, CA. Vinyl recording using Technics 1200 turntables with Stanton cartriges, Numark DM-1650 Stereo DJ Mixer, Technics Cassette Deck on to a Maxell XL-llS tape. Sorry for the poor sound quality, the original master is long gone. Thank you to Sean Cooper for transferring this from your copy. Uploaded by special request... I will upload part 2 soon.

Idle Cellars is back with another chiller killer for your Autumn revelry! This time around we’ve got another stellar mix from West Coast pioneer, Bay Area Rave legend & Cali breakbeat progenitor DJ SPUN! Responsible for breaking breaks in SF in the early 90s, punk rock bandleader in the early 80s, disco mastermind in the early 00’s - the man has been there, done that, whether via his label Rong Music, curating events at PS1 in NYC with the cream of club culture, humbly embodying some of the greatest DJ skills in the world, let alone the US (and let alone California!). 

His resume is far too long to list here, but he’s given us this fantastic mix for horizontal grooving that he’s titled “Idle Dub…Idle Chug”. Spun commented: “For fall and winter I usually switch to red wine…So this mix marked the start of the season and is a testament to the effect of a bottle of red!” Say no more squire! 

As usual, we’re in love with this journey through music, a gentle nudge from wonderful ambience through some late-night dubby funk on a slo-mo tip, keeping things musical and in outerspace!
