Winter 2021’s unlikeliest street anthem came from a Los Angeles rapper whose gruff voice suggests he’s been chain-smoking Newports since he left the womb—in a good way. Drino’s “Back out the Knocks” splits the difference between club banger and funeral dirge, and it’s the biggest hit to come out of California’s blossoming drill scene. All of the dark, heavy beats on his debut album Killa Season Vol.2 come courtesy of UK drill beatmaker Arc Beats, introducing grime and garage undertones into Drino’s tough, trigger-happy raps. But despite its pan-Pacific blend of influences, the sound is New York to the core, like on “Violate,” which sounds like a Gen Z update of Rico Recklezz’s “No Talking.”

As the “Killa Season Vol.2” wave begins to reveal itself, Drino has taken advantage of being locked into the lab by focusing on new material, now releasing a brand new video titled “Back Out The Knocks.” Continuing to offload his “Violate” persona, Drino’s latest track is filled with lyrics that don’t really have anything to do with the virus. Instead, he resorts to speaking on “Power, Drugs & Money” and “Purging & Smoking Weed” prepared for war, revealing that the pandemic hasn’t effectually changed Drino’s way of life.
