Lumberjacks in Hell is a one-man mission founded in 2010 in Amsterdam by Marcel Vogel, as a family and platform for soulful artists around the globe. The seminal labels output is a testament to Marcel’s impeccable taste and golden eared A&R skill.  No gimmicks required, just a passion for raw, warm, soulful shades of house and disco. LIH has proudly released killer cuts by the DJ’s DJ Rahaan, Red Greg, Jamie 3:26 & Cratebugs, the late Soulphiction, Dan Shake, Karizma, Giovanni Damico,  Mendel, Rayko, Eddie C and the don that is Al Kent. 
For its next release, LIH takes a surprising turn with an eight track LP by Berliners Panna Cotta. This duo came together one summer evening on the legendary Berlin airfield of Tempelhof. Their debut album is the sonically sweet and heartfelt audio delight entitled ‘Sunrise’, produced, and curated with blissed-out, sun soaked, love filled days in mind.
Sitting somewhere between sultry disco and polished pop, French-born Alex Arslan, and Italian Riccardo Pirotto, takes the listener on a journey to the blissful planet joy. All of the tracks are composed, mixed, and mastered on vintage analog gear, maintaining a feeling of past, and making for a sublime combination of warm keys and heart beating drums.  The music is inspired by Panna Cotta’s soulful search for instant happiness and long-lasting love through  poetry in musical moments.

Parisian duo Masomenos deliver their new LP ‘Unidentified Aerial Phenomena’ this May, coming via the Automatic Writing imprint and comprised of eleven originals, several of which feature Amsterdam’s San Proper.

Masomenos have always explored parallel worlds with their music, fusing an amalgamation of influences and bringing into their universe all the humour and kindness they’ve met on their path. Their music, weird and intriguing for some, lively and trippy for others, is like an ongoing story told over more than 15 years of musical production. Alongside the music is their graphic design accompaniment of funny creatures, and mystical figures. In this new opus, they surf the frontier between their club sound and home listening,
inviting friends over for the ride. Julien Quentin at the piano, Adrien Boisseau on the viola, and San Proper on vibe & vocals.
Across the ‘Unidentified Aerial Phenomena’ LP Masomenos traverse through a variety of styles, from dynamic, microhouse compositions like ‘Tournicoti’, ‘Ainamor’ and ‘Planet X feat. San Proper’, which bring
together bumpy, modulating drums with textural synths and sprinklings of jazz throughout. Also on offer is some heavy dub influencefound in cuts like‘Hollow’, ‘Cleopatra feat. San Proper’ and title-track ‘UAP’ which utilise bubbling stab echoes, swirling atmospherics and heavy doses of sub bass.
The album also sees many weird and wonderful explorations straddling the lines between electronica and house, like the computer game style of opening track ‘Rêve’, acid infused pad driven workout ‘Are You Sure’, cinematic feel of ‘Mystery Unsolved’ and closing cut ‘Daffy’s Land’ which wanders through six minutes of unfolding bass growls, nuanced rhythms and shimmering synth sequences.

Exclusive: Azemad - Helwan

Cultural crosser Azemad not only crossed boarders when moving from chaotic Cairo to chaotic Berlin but incorporates the best of both worlds in his music. Therefore his works include sounds, elements, drums and vocals with an Arabic and African-touch or influence and notes from the capital’s Techno or Electronic music scene. The result is, contrary to the assumption probably, a homogeneous new EP - also due the artist’s technological development from the EP’s predecessor Dreams - that showcases Azemad’s artistic being and identity at the same time. Shortly before the release of Afriki on Berlin label Awkwardly Social, the artists spoke to Torture the Artist about the production process, the stories that come with each title, his musical progress and inspiration as well as the influences of both metropolis on his music.
