This track is a good early example of combining what I learned after doing experimentation, and applying it to make something cohesive.

I got inspiration for this track after listening to Mall a bunch of times and realizing I only liked about 10% of the original song. I liked the melancholy, nostalgic atmosphere produced by the chords, which reminded me of a lofi track, but the chords themselves seemed unconventional from lofi, so I had the idea of making a lofi track that would use this chord progression to sound unique.

For the main loop, I chopped the intro to Mall, and put EQ and reverb for a warmer feel. Instead of directly chopping, I applied Gross Beat, and used an automation clip to program different stutter presets throughout the song. I put a low pass(?) filter on the track which I automated to cut high frequencies at certain parts of the song. The purpose of making the sample warmer was  because I planned to omit the bass from the tracks to give it a colder feel, with only the sample providing warmth, as well as the kicks and a clap, which I stretched out to produce a murky, cloudy drone, present in every 4 bars.

This track was the first time I layered my drums. I layered the stock 808s with another kick to give it more punch; same with the hi hats. The snare was the default I was using at the time, which was a preset of Wave Traveller, but pitched down to give it more presence in the low end, and I did the same with the hi hats.

The end of the track features a pitch shift introduced by a turndown effect from Gross Beat. I used two Gross Beat Plugins to use multiple presets at the same time. I used volume automation to fade out the drums and the sample, which were routed to separate tracks so I could control both independently of one another. The second part of the sample is accompanied with an altered drum beat, and hi hats played in a 3/4 time signature, to give it a sense of motion.

For what it is, I think this track works how it's supposed to. It does a better job at creating motion and energy, albeit not very much, but it doesn't need to for what it's trying to achieve. The use of 3/4 hi hats gave it bounce, and was the first time I played with mixing time signatures. There is some clicking on the kicks, but I didn't know how to fix that at the time. The drums are also not perfectly on grid, which is most noticeable with the 2nd hi hat pattern, but it gives this song a lilt in a good way, so that it feels casual and loose (a similar feeling to Violin). The percussion choice is also relatively appropriate for the sample. It falls short in some areas, but its flaws and successes make for a pretty cohesive song, in terms of creating an atmosphere. More could have been done to give it personality, but with the tools I had at the time, it felt like a success.

This track was the culmination of the skills I learned at that time. Everything mostly came together to form a track that was cohesive, deliberately and accidentally.
