Sensorium – Mojo Filter


 Following on from the debut cult classic ESCAPE AID, SENSORIUM is a continuation of the MOJO FILTER vision quest. Merging the senses and traversing the human experience through the medium of dance, this second album seeks to alchemise the listener’s tools of perception in the crucible of the dance floor. Whilst guiding the initiate through the landscape of their inner-terrain the story jaunts and jolts, writhes, rises and revives a sense of exploration and wonderment for the great mystery.

 The opening track ‘WILD EYES’ harks to a golden age of free love and festival culture before launching into the kaleidoscopic jet-stream of ‘INNER DAZE’. From these dizzying heights of acid-drenched bliss the journey spirals into the looming and desolate ‘QUAGMIRE’ of darkness and shadow. It is not until ‘STRANGE BEAUTIFUL’ that the adventure bristles with rainbow rays of hope and revelation once more as a ‘NEW WORLD (in her view)’ comes sharply into focus. This mechanized mutant impulsively drives us out of the sprawling metropolis into the wide open where new lands and new life awaits.
 From here ‘THE SPIRITUALIST’ revives and reminds us of our ancestral origins reconnecting our modern yet fractured soul to the wonder and source of life. ‘THE TEMPLE OF LIGHT’ proceeds to open it’s doors to those willing to enter and hear the instruments of universe play the symphony of existence. It all seems so ‘FAR FROM THE TREE’ by this time but with a rekindled ability to make sense from non-sense we jig forth with a smile towards new frontiers...
 ‘WATT THE FUCK’ brings humour and wisdom to the dance with it’s quick witted groove and childlike wonder that toys and tantalizes expectations until the youth must mature and ask ‘What’s A Human To Do?’ This nostalgic futurist foire remarks on the corrupt ambitions we once pursued and seeks to remedy emptiness with acceptance and renewed trajectory. 
 Only with ‘GENESIS’ can the soul finally transcend into it’s rightful 5th dimensional being amid the stars as a sentinel of light circling the euphoric ‘ORBITAL PLANE’ of cosmological consciousness.

This summer, Mojo Filter (A.K.A Ben Zaven-Crane), the raconteur and meteoric mind behind popular Bandcamp series ‘AOR Disco Vintage Edits’, ‘Modern Re-Loves’ and ‘Autobahn Edits’, re-emerges from his cosmic wormhole homestead to warp festival dancefloors and spiralize minds once more. With him, he brings gifts: a bowl of psychotropic punch and a compilation of possibly his finest musical accomplishments to date, ‘Autobahn Edits Volume 3’…

Crane’s canny ability to select hits from throughout the ages and inject them with his own scintillating electronics, as if they had always been there, has gained him plaudits not just from across the blogosphere, but also from tastemakers at trusted stations like 6Music and KCRW. As a result his edit compilations on Bandcamp have escalated far beyond the ‘cottage industry’ project they were initially intended as, and recently earned themselves a further 7”s sub-series on Dom Servini’s WHAWHA45's label.

Whilst exuding the same unmistakable soma of his vintage edits, Mojo Filter’s AEV 3 should be considered a firm homage to artists of the present and future era, offering up viosionary reworks of timeless classics from Beirut and Thomas Newman alongside a new wave of artists such as Uone and Ditti.

A short time spent with the record will reveal to fans of Mojo Filter, a new sensitivity and ambition for his compositions. Whilst forging the old and the new these edits are essentially D.J tools to evoke high strangeness, familiarity and exploration on the dancefloor and kitchen alike. It is also perhaps a more striking realization of Crane’s desire to tell stories through music by listening to this body of work as a whole experience revealing the deeper narratives woven within.

Crane’s inventive DJ sets and meticulously curated music stages at Secret Garden Party, Bestival and Noisily* have often seen him resonate at more obscure frequencies than those represented in this album. As with all Mojo Filter records, however, the invitation for the listener to open the wrong door and tumble down the rabbit hole remains tantalizing seductive throughout, whether it’s an obscure Kyrill Stefanov re-imagination or a rework of a Thomas Newman film score.

Indeed, AEV3 is every bit the mystery-charged musical super highway depicted in the cover art – exploratory long haul excursions, psycho-tropical turnpikes, fairytale trails and scenic highroads are just some of the deviations enticingly framed within this cult compilation series.

Where the road leads next for Mojo’s sound is wonderfully unclear, by design, but through this filter, the approaching landscape looks very interesting…
One thing we can be sure of: wherever Crane does end up, he will soon become native.
He will be among its people, speaking their language and smoking their most sacred leaves with the big chief.


These edit compilations are ultimately tools for the like-minded D.J’s that share this joy for mesmerising sounds woven with intrigue and fable. Telling stories through journeys of ritual and dance invite fellow psychonauts to explore their mind and body whilst in communion with those in resonance. This is a powerful rite of passage that can be formative in those cherished periods of freedom, exploration and self-discovery.
In some ways previous compilations present the past, present and now future of dance music offering tools to evoke a cascade of nostalgia and visionary states to elevate one’s being.

Little Thoughts - Angel Siren (Mojo Filter Pearly Gates Re-Route)

L.O.V.E. takes the positive feelings abundant in Dream even further. In its sweet and innocent, feel-good groove, this is Escape Aid at its softest. Even vocal snippets of Sesame Street’s Elmo can be just about made out, murmuring through the track’s fuzzy warm glow, providing the most innocent of reminiscences, while the euphoric bed of warm guitars wails gently beneath. At its most unabashed L.O.V.E. explodes into a fluttering of flutes so joyful it’s hard to keep a smile from breaking through.

OAKY TIMBRE is the greatest homage conceivable to the UK Comedy duo The Mighty Boosh and, fittingly, the Boosh boys themselves have personally endorsed the track, such is their appreciation of it. Reappropriating the monologue of Howard Moon discovering ‘Howard’s Note’ into a dance track, perfectly demonstrates Crane’s ever-present sense of humour, and ear for an opportunity. Oaky Timbre is an idea so absurd that it should never have worked, but it has defiantly proven to rock crowds and leave revellers sweaty and stunned, in a smiling daze, quite unsure what just happened.

And LET’S GET BRUTAL lies beyond that door. With little hesitation, the LP wades in with the crunching beats, mischievous riffs and trippy carnival atmosphere typical of Mojo Filter’s effervescent DJ sets. Though peppered with idiosyncratic sorties into weird and wonderful territories, in this case even veering playfully into cosmic breakdance from time to time, Let’s Get Brutal’s intention is very clear. It rides a chunky slo-mo groove so infectious and familiar that it leaves no room on the dancefloor for ‘foolin’ around’.

BOOM BOOM owes its provenance to a casual purchase of a cheap-as-chips DVD of prayer mantras some years ago, on one of Crane’s many jaunts to India. Once brought home and promptly fed through his mangle of unmistakable fizzing psychedelic electronica, Boom Boom was created just hours after he returned to the UK. It opens the album like a sprawling carpet, woven with intricate dreams and Eastern ideals, sat before you, inviting you seductively to walk up, open the giant door and see what lies beyond.

COLOURED DREAMS opens Escape Aid and thus begins the quest to titillate your mind and body and provides the perfect gateway into the heady universe of Escape Aid.. Coloured Dreams is a wigged-out kind of half-speed two-step, once again deftly marrying ‘60s psychedelia elements with the most contemporary of production techniques, sounds and rhythms, in the way that only Crane can. By no means a chill-out intro, Dreams is just as full of ambition and ideas as any of the other album tracks, leaving very little room for you to drift off as you run the gauntlet of giant synth stabs, squelching bassline, discordant guitar riffs and fizzing energy. However, Dreams is no less the perfect opening for an LP that is in the truest sense an ‘album’, or an eclectic ‘journey’ – terms you might more freely enjoy applying to the trailblazing electronic records of a bygone era.
