Sensorium – Mojo Filter


 Following on from the debut cult classic ESCAPE AID, SENSORIUM is a continuation of the MOJO FILTER vision quest. Merging the senses and traversing the human experience through the medium of dance, this second album seeks to alchemise the listener’s tools of perception in the crucible of the dance floor. Whilst guiding the initiate through the landscape of their inner-terrain the story jaunts and jolts, writhes, rises and revives a sense of exploration and wonderment for the great mystery.

 The opening track ‘WILD EYES’ harks to a golden age of free love and festival culture before launching into the kaleidoscopic jet-stream of ‘INNER DAZE’. From these dizzying heights of acid-drenched bliss the journey spirals into the looming and desolate ‘QUAGMIRE’ of darkness and shadow. It is not until ‘STRANGE BEAUTIFUL’ that the adventure bristles with rainbow rays of hope and revelation once more as a ‘NEW WORLD (in her view)’ comes sharply into focus. This mechanized mutant impulsively drives us out of the sprawling metropolis into the wide open where new lands and new life awaits.
 From here ‘THE SPIRITUALIST’ revives and reminds us of our ancestral origins reconnecting our modern yet fractured soul to the wonder and source of life. ‘THE TEMPLE OF LIGHT’ proceeds to open it’s doors to those willing to enter and hear the instruments of universe play the symphony of existence. It all seems so ‘FAR FROM THE TREE’ by this time but with a rekindled ability to make sense from non-sense we jig forth with a smile towards new frontiers...
 ‘WATT THE FUCK’ brings humour and wisdom to the dance with it’s quick witted groove and childlike wonder that toys and tantalizes expectations until the youth must mature and ask ‘What’s A Human To Do?’ This nostalgic futurist foire remarks on the corrupt ambitions we once pursued and seeks to remedy emptiness with acceptance and renewed trajectory. 
 Only with ‘GENESIS’ can the soul finally transcend into it’s rightful 5th dimensional being amid the stars as a sentinel of light circling the euphoric ‘ORBITAL PLANE’ of cosmological consciousness.

Mojo Filter - Escape-Aid
The readying of Escape Aid is a focus-shifting landmark in the story of Mojo Filter – until now, a producer revered most for his prolific and other-worldly contributions to the world of re-edits, re-rubs, re-works, and re-imaginations.  No kidding, in recent years he’s casually knocked out FOUR Volumes of his hugely popular ‘AOR Vintage Edits’ compilation, each one a masterclass in production and creativity.

As its title and [Luke Insect] artwork suggest, Mojo Filter’s debut LP ‘Escape Aid’ is the ultimate break-out from reality. It is a back-and-forth rally of heart-in-throat, petrifying excitement and then blissful moments of total release, as if embodying one nail-biting Kool Aid Acid trip at the best party humanly imaginable… 

As a debut, Escape Aid is a melting pot of ideas, memories and emotions. On every listen, each track can recall different images and various life experiences: the sweet and innocent reverie of childhood, discovering your parent’s vinyl collection, falling in love, your first sun-drenched festival, that intense abandoned warehouse party where you lost your mates and got rescued by an aged hippy... However, its eclectic nature, various genres and component parts are successfully held together in a cohesive, albeit eccentric, arc. Crane and his sound are inexorably one and the same, a sort of erudite, coherent encyclopaedia of the far-out.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the marriage of old and new remains a leading theme throughout Crane’s own material, with tracks like White Rabbit, Acid Land and Rainbow juxtaposing 60’s Psychedelia sounds with the high-tech production styles of today’s freakish warehouse raves. Equally psychedelic are Honey Badger and Oaky Timbre, an all-out homage to the Mighty Boosh, both emblematic of Crane’s tongue-in-cheek approach and surreal mindset, one that can in no small part owe itself to his Crane’s goliath psilocybin intake!  

The carnivalesque banger Brutal, the sleazy Punk Funk of Serious and Mojo’s stunningly anthemic remake of the Screamin’ Jay Hawkins classic ‘Put a Spell On You’, take the album confidently into festival territory; Ben sounds entirely at home here, owing to his annual role of curating Artful Badger’s dance arenas at Secret Garden Party and Wilderness festival. Perhaps the most unexpected twists and turns come from the LP’s softer tracks, Boom, a sultry Eastern drifter, Dream, a beautifully melancholic slice of Nu Disco, and L.O.V.E. a sweet and innocent, feel-good Balearic roller worthy of any Mediterranean sunset…

Escape Aid is in the truest sense an ‘album’, a finely planned eclectic tour. At its finish, you are left thinking… it’s not over yet… is it?  And for this prolific and innovative producer, it clearly isn’t. In fact, the gateway is now wide open...

September 2023 - Escape Aid - Urban Epiphanies

Coloured Dreams is a wigged-out kind of half-speed two-step, once again deftly marrying ‘60s psychedelia elements with the most contemporary of production techniques, sounds and rhythms, in the way that only Crane can. By no means a chill-out intro, Coloured Dreams is just as full of ambition and ideas as any of the other album tracks, leaving very little room for you to drift off as you run the gauntlet of giant synth stabs, squelching bassline, discordant guitar riffs and fizzing energy.

BOOM BOOM provides the perfect gateway into the heady universe of Escape Aid owing its provenance from a casual purchase of a cheap-as-chips DVD of prayer mantras some years ago, on one of Crane’s many jaunts to India. 

Once brought home and promptly fed through his mangle of unmistakable fizzing psychedelic electronica, Boom Boom was created just hours after he returned to the UK. It continues to open the album like a sprawling carpet, woven with intricate dreams and Eastern ideals, sat before you, inviting you seductively to walk up, open the giant door and see what lies beyond.

With little hesitation, the LP wades in with the crunching beats, mischievous riffs and trippy carnival atmosphere typical of Mojo Filter’s effervescent DJ sets. Though peppered with idiosyncratic sorties into weird and wonderful territories, in this case even veering playfully into cosmic breakdance from time to time, Let’s Get Brutal’s intention is very clear. It rides a chunky slo-mo groove so infectious and familiar that it will scorch your pants.

OAKY TIMBRE is the greatest homage conceivable to the UK Comedy duo The Mighty Boosh and, fittingly, the Boosh boys themselves have personally endorsed the track, such is their appreciation of it. 

Reappropriating the monologue of Howard Moon discovering ‘Howard’s Note’ into a dance track, perfectly demonstrates Crane’s ever-present sense of humour, and ear for an opportunity. Oaky Timbre is an idea so absurd that it should never have worked, but it has defiantly proven to rock crowds and leave revellers sweaty and stunned, in a smiling daze, quite unsure what just happened.

In the Fullness of Time, Crane has found his melodic self and he grips on tightly, conjuring up a new romantic synth line so simple and catchy that it remains with you way after the initial listen. Time somehow persists in your mind with a melancholic and beautiful sort of nostalgia, evoking hazy memories of yore. It is a friendly embrace on an otherwise unpredictable journey and is perhaps the album’s most truly original composition, born simply out of an extended session with a borrowed Moog and no other preconceived plans.
