The Space Between Guest Mix Series

I've always debated posting edits of tracks that aren't my originals but I have so many in my archives and so many more ideas to come so I figured it was time to share them with the world in between the time I have not been creating mixes.

I'd rather share something that makes me feel a certain way than be intimidated by what others might think of me. That's what music is all about, right?

I've always loved the original version of Blinding Lights by The Weeknd (and I'm not usually into pop music). But when I heard the cover by Revelries and Victoria Ross, it hit me a different way. A little bit of playing around in my DAW and this was the end result... a slowed, sexy version that I hope you enjoy as much as I do

The New Moon on Wednesday, September 20 falls in Virgo, persisting the theme that begin with the Total Solar Eclipse on August 21. Adjustments we find ourselves making during this period are those fine-tuning our lives as we progress toward our long-term goals.

You might notice reminders of painful wounds from a previous life but pushing through is crucial to moving forward throughout the healing process. Adapt to unexpected changes and keep fighting for your dreams.

When it comes to trust, intuition is your ultimate companion. Our dreams lie directly within reach and it is up to us to secure them in our clutch. Often we get distracted by external influences but, by fine tuning, we are always able to return to the foundation of all things -
 love. Anything worth doing never comes easy. Facing our wounds and emerging is a temporary obstacle as we navigate the spectrum of love.

"Virgo separates. Organizes. Categorizes. Wants to understand. Wants to learn. Wants to get it right.

Virgo wants to know the ins and outs of a thing. It sticks with something through the entire process. Digesting. Assimilating. Integrating the information into its entire being.

Virgo becomes what it tries to perfect.

Virgo works hard. Non-stop. Non-competitively. It works for the sheer satisfaction of getting something done. It works for the sadistic pleasure of knowing that it will never get it done satisfactorily because its own standards are impossible to attain.

But it will die trying.

This week the new moon in Virgo is accompanied by Mercury, Venus, and Mars in the effort-centric earth sign. This makes for an incredibly specific new moon. Just as Virgo would have it.

However, this lunation is far from tidy as its ruler, Mercury, is in an exact opposition to Neptune moments before the new moon takes place. This is very close to the point where Mercury stationed retrograde. Mercury, now direct, gets to complete this opposition while clearing its retrograde shadow.

Intoxicated by Neptune’s touch, Mercury is less than trustworthy under this influence. Less than exact. Less than careful with its application of knowledge. Neptune blurs lines and facts. Dissipates focus and and renders solid shapes formless. This aspect can be helpful for meditations and creative works, as it wants to connects us to something greater than ourselves and opens our imagination up to all possibilities.

The week is influenced by both Mercury and Mars’s opposition to the Sea God. Sensitizing us. Reminding us of how vulnerable we are. Reminding us of how willing we are to stick our heads in the sand and hope for the best. The antidote to which is always to go back to basics. Go back to foundations. Go back to keeping it simple and sorting through the facts. Go back to the real reason that you wanted to do something in the first place. The antidote to confusion is often times deciding that we aren’t confused. Reminding ourselves that when we get quiet enough and wait long enough, we’ll always know what we need to do.

What is ‘The Ego?’ 

Psychedelic Conference speaker, non-ordinary states of consciousness researcher, founder of holotropic breathwork, and iconic psychiatrist Stanislav Grof cited Sigmund Freud's definition as our capacity to perceive [material] reality so to appropriately respond to the world around us.

From a spirituality or psychedelic research context, ego appears as something forged from birth.

Grof suggests this is the moment we begin constructing a separate identity giving us a sense of separation from all things.

As we experience uncomfortable situations, this generates a feeling we should be in control, able to deal with the world from a position of power.

In psychedelic studies, letting go of this notion is referred to as ‘ego death.’

This creates profound fear, from a Freudian perspective, that losing the ego means not being able to handle reality from that point.

But what is it which dies through this process of death and rebirth?...

A ‘false ego.’

Losing ego doesn’t impair our ability to function, to tie our shoes or bite a hamburger; Rather it dispels a false sense of identity, a previous separation between oneself and the external.

What actually occurs, according to Karl Marx, is dissolution of perceived restrictions and limitations, allowing us to be much freer in this world. 

We all can tap into this notion of Oneness and harness our unlimited power when we return to the source.

Do you believe in magic?

Not existential fairytales or Disney movies... I'm referring to inherent energies constantly moving through and around us, pirouetting across the universe in a perfectly-harmonized, timeless cosmic dance...

A dance as effortless as the song of the swallow (bird), a song whose predominant notes are C♯ & F♯. These same frequencies emanate as elements and color from one of the largest stars in our galaxy - Eta Carinae - as observed by the Hubble Space Telescope.

Ancient Egyptian manuscripts are instilled with musical notation using 7 tones and 7 colors. In the temple at Denderah can be found the Hymn to Hathor - goddess of music and transformation:

"The sky and its' stars make music to you. The Sun and The Moon praise you. The gods sing to you."

On October 16, 2017, researchers worldwide came together in announcing their observance of two neutron stars colliding. This collision revealed itself as the source of heavy elements including gold, a common byproduct of alchemy and found in everything from cell phones to nuclear weapons.

By definition, alchemy refers to:
• a process to "purify, mature, and perfect certain objects."
• the transmutation of 'base metals' (e.g., lead) into 'noble metals' (particularly gold)
• the creation of an elixir of immortality

The alchemical marriage of these two heavenly bodies furthermore led to detection of gravitational waves, confirming an Albert Einstein hypothesis more than one-century old.

Birthed when massive objects spin around one another and finally collide, gravitational waves ripple in the fabric of space-time.

These ripples traveled billions of lightyears to Earth, setting off detectors in the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory — whose founders won the Nobel Prize in physics earlier this year, as they blanketed our planet at 8:41 a.m. ET on August 17, just days before the Total Solar Eclipse.

As above, so below.

These energies are of everything that has been and all that will be... Energies with physical properties that effortlessly flow as an abundant river should we allow them.

Be formless. Be shapeless. Flow. Create Magic.

We are alchemy.

What is the secret to life?

While there may never be a general agreement surrounding this eternal existential debate, many sophisticated civilizations, cultures, and innovators across recorded history have sought answers by looking toward the skies.

Mahayana Buddhist's of the 3rd Century described a cosmology not unlike the most advanced physics of modern days.

From this stemmed the metaphor 'Indra's Net of Jewels' to describe a much older Vedic teaching which illustrates the way the fabric of The Universe is woven together. 

The Buddha had yet another term for the primary substance of life termed ‘Kalapas.’ These tiny particles are arising and passing away trillions of times per second.

In the ancient traditions of the East it was understood for thousands of years that all is vibration. 

Nada Brahma - the sound of The Universe. 

The word ‘Nada’ means sound or vibration and ‘Brahma’ is the name of ‘god.’

Nikola Tesla confidently suggested, "If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration."

In his 1991 novel Author Joachim Ernst-Berendt reiterated these sentiments, declaring "The world IS sound" while referring to Nada Brahma as the landscape of all consciousness.

Brahma simultaneously IS the Universe and IS the creator; the artist and the art are inseparable. 

In The Upanishads, one of the oldest human records from ancient India, it is said Brahma - the creator - sitting on a lotus opens his eyes and a world comes into being. Brahma closes his eyes and a world goes out of being.

Ancient mystics, yogis, and seers have maintained that there is a field at the root level of consciousness - The Akashic Field, or Akashic Records, where all information, all experience - past, present, and future - exists now and always. 

It is this matrix from which all things arise, from subatomic particles to galaxies: stars, planets, and all life.

Native American and other indigenous traditions have said everything has Spirit, which is simply another way of saying that everything is connected to one vibratory force.

There is one consciousness, one field, one force that moves through all. 

This field is not happening around you. It is happening through you. And happening as you. 

You are the “U” in Universe. 

You are the eyes through which creation sees itself.

The Universe is always whispering its' secrets. It's up to us to listen.

Dubbed a "modern day Prometheus" by Smithsonian, Nikola Tesla transmuted his sentiment into inventions which have transformed the evolution of the planet we inhabit.

Complex in theory though simple in actuality, these principles - rooted in energy, frequency, and vibration - are omnipotent and inherent in the totality of our physical experience.

To access this key capable of unlocking our limitless potential we need only to go within, find the stillness, and observe.

Crowned the most popular spiritual author in the United States by The New York Times, Eckhart Tolle echoed this affirmation in his best-selling book 'The Power of Now' which as been translated to 33+ languages with 3+ million copies sold since published nearly 3 decades ago:

"In the stillness of your presence, you can feel your own formless and timeless reality as the unmanifested life that animates your physical form. You can then feel the same life deep within every other human and every other creature.

You look beyond the veil of form and separation.

This is the realization of oneness. This is love."

Perry's call to create arose after experiencing music's profound ability to heal. Wanting to share this healing gift of music, Perry began creating mixes to parallel the physical sequences in the yoga classes he guides.

His exploration of arranging rhythms into flow has only deepened his appreciation for the healing capacity of harmony.

We are conditioned to believe fulfillment resides in the external. However we may look beyond the veil of form and separation by accessing the stillness at any given moment.

Today’s ‘Super Blue Blood Moon’ marks a rare cosmic phenomenon.

A convergence having last occurred in 1866, January 31 witnesses a simultaneous supermoon (point nearest Earth in a given orbit), blue moon (second full moon in a calendar month), and blood moon (red appearance during the total lunar eclipse).
 
Derived from the Greek word “ekleipsis” meaning “to leave behind and to abandon”, eclipses are cross-culturally honored as harbingers of change, catalyzing our abilities to manifest while expediting the demise of situations we’ve outgrown.
 
On a literal level, eclipses reveal a shadow.
 
Metaphorically, the same may be interpreted as this total lunar eclipse returns to astrological sign of Leo.
 
Representing fertility and rebirth, this zodiac is the same in which August 21’s total solar eclipse temporarily cast darkness upon the planet before re-emerging into light.
 
Parallels may be seen between this symbolism and the White Buffalo Prophecy of the Lakota Oyate.
 
Within Native American culture, the American Buffalo is a symbol of abundance, manifestation, and sacred life. Forged from legend, this symbolism recounts oral story which spans generations:
 
Long ago during an era in which resources were scarce the Oceti­Shakowin - the seven sacred council fires of the Lakota Oyate - came together to camp in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Despite numerous days of unsuccessful hunting trips the sun remained strong in the sky, fervently shining upon the camp.

As days pressed forward, two young hunters returned to the hills. 
 
Along their journey a beautiful young woman adorned in white appeared, instructing them "Return to your people and tell them I am coming." This woman fulfilled her promise, gifting  the Lakota with the sacred pipe while sharing the mysteries of earth and showing how all is connected.
 
Last seen shape-shifting into a snow-white buffalo calf before disappearing into the setting sun, White Buffalo Calf Woman promised to return every generation to guide Earth’s people along the path of wisdom and peace. Legend recounts upon her leaving, great buffalo herds surrounded the Lakota camp and, as the pipe was honored, starvation ceased and bounty remained.
 
Her return, as prophesied, would occur in an time of great shift and transformation - the birth of a newly enlightened era.
 
The Native Americans see the birth of a white buffalo calf as the most significant of prophetic signs. Oglala Medicine Man from Pine Ridge, South Dakota foretold, "It will bring about purity of mind, body, and spirit; unify all nations—black, red, yellow, and white."
 
The birth of the sacred white buffalo provides an indication that good times are imminent, a commencement of the next cycle of life’s sacred hoop.
 
May 7, 2016 saw the white buffalo return with the birth of a calf on Sioux Valley Dakota Oyate land. 
 
To a species having recently faced extinction and at 1-in-650 million odds, this event is significant to Elders, Wisdom Keepers, and sacred nations. Sioux Valley Chief Vincent Tacan recognizes the birth as “a signal to us that not only is our culture and people surviving, but thriving.”
 
It is a reminder one does not need to struggle to survive. This is especially true when proper action is supplemented with intention and sacred time for reflection. By adapting to allow union of the seemingly mundane with the divine, all that is needed will come to be provided.
 
The forefathers have long spoke of days of great peace and global unity which are unfolding in the skies and on the ground.

Witchtape #18 | Guest Wizz : Perry ∞

On a drizzly spring day, a lone wizard got lost in a big forest.  He sensed immediately that this was not an ordinary forest.  The most beautiful flowers were blooming everywhere and the birds were not shy at all.  Some birds even landed on his hand when he stretched it out.  This is not unusual for wizards as they have a strong bond with nature, but when he looked carefully at these two owls who were sitting on his hand, he realized they belong to an endangered species which were believed to have disappeared from the wild in this part of the world.  Now the wizard was absolutely convinced that this must be one of these forests which is being protected by a witch.  He had already heard stories from other wizards that witches were making a comeback in recent years, yet he had never seen one of these elusive creatures with his own eyes.  And – looking at the pristine state of this forest – this must surely be a very powerful and experienced witch, and probably pretty old.  The wizard didn’t have high hopes of spotting the witch, as they are known have excellent hiding skills.  So he simply savored the sheer beauty of this garden of Eden…

Thanks for finding the second mix in the series of ‘In-Too-Deep’ .  This one travels from my great friend Perry, residing somewhere in deepest Guatemala, to myself in a little studio in wonderful leafy Surrey in the UK…  then departs once again back to Guatemala.. so is a mix of three halves !

I remember back to 2016 when I first started really getting in to the downtempo scene and the wonderful community following and partaking in it, there were a bunch of DJ’s and producers that really stood out.  It was them that inadvertently guided me into the resurrection of my own DJ’ing career 😊
One of those DJ’s was Perry.  I remember hearing one of his sets and it just blowing me away.., from then on I became an avid follower listening to everything he released.., and still do.

It is such an honor for me to take part in this collaboration with Perry, in fact it feels a little surreal.. and I certainly hugely enjoyed the experience.

So.. as with the previous mix in this series,  we have attempted to create a coherent set as if we standing side by side in a venue.. although we have possibly made this one unique in that Perry has taken care of the first and third parts, with myself doing the middle section.  Again, if were to be successful in our venture – the whole thing would hopefully sound seamless !

TantRut moved to the tiny Swedish island Brännö after seven wild years in Berlin. There he got inspired on legendary full moon beach raves to pick up DJing. His mixes contain tracks with elements of deep tribal dance music, folkloric sounds and rhythms in a modern electronic house or techno version. @cedromusic and I became connected during @momentomcollective artist residency in Nicaragua and through our good mutual friend @j_pool. There was an immediate alignment as I was captivated by Cedro's energy and dedication to his production craft. Grateful to be connected as friends and showcase this live set recording from our boat party before things went down and we found ourselves in quarantine.

Cedro Is The Space Between (Live In Nicaragua)

Introducing the first single release through The Space Between - a deep, drippy, percussion-filled edit of Exilio (Exile) from Thievery Corporation's third studio album "The Richest Man In Babylon" (2002).

The craftsman lending his hand to this edit is @j_pool or 'Audio Jesus' as I've come to call him after spending over 1 month together creating high in the mountains along the Pacific coastline in Nicaragua.

DJ, Producer, Co-Founder of Inspirit Holistic Music Production Retreat and Audio Engineer @j_pool (Joe DeFaria) and I became connected through @momentomcollective artist residency at Maderas Village where we found ourselves in quarantine while the Coronavirus outbreak shut down travel across the planet.

Initially in residency with 30+ artists and creators, Joe, myself and everyone else were forced to face decisions as to whether or not to return home or remain in Nicaragua as a #CommunityInQuarantine and create.

We both chose to stay, focusing our energy on creating (and taking advantage of the awesome on-site music studio) as we continue to ride out whatever it is is happening on the planet.

Grateful for @j_pool for helping me finally actualize the dream of releasing single tracks through this channel. It's been an inspiration to watch him work and learn from him. Couldn't think of anyone I'd rather have for the first single premiere on The Space Between.

I met @j_pool during the @momentomcollective artist residency at the beginning of March 2020 just before the Coronavirus outbreak where he was facilitating Ableton music production and recording classes through his project Inspirit Holistic Music Production Retreat (more info at www.inspirit.love/). We ended up "quarantined" together and traveled after the conclusion of the residency to Ometepe Island in Nicaragua.

We were fortunate to be surrounded by an abundance of land, clean water, healthy food and amazing people while the rest of the world seemed to be on pause. We developed an amazing friendship, one of the few people I consider a true brother, while finding ourselves able to share and explore music with zero restriction - the only place in the world I'm aware of which was able to do so at the time.

Over the next few months we would play countless b2b sets, full moon parties and ecstatic dances during our time together on the island, celebrating our lives, freedoms and gratitude for the ability to do so and everyone around who was able to share these experiences with us.

This set is a special one, as it includes all originally-produced music from Joe and is a live set recording for an ecstatic dance facilitated high up on Volcan Concepcion overlooking Lake Nicaragua at sunset.

This rare set of 100% @j_pool originals opens up with one of his newest productions "Mi Alma" in which all vocals and melodies were actually recorded himself.

I trust the experience will shine through, and hope you can tap into the heart-felt creations Joe shares in this exclusive mix while getting a taste of what life has been like on Ometepe aka Infinity Island.

J.Pool Is The Space Between (Infinity Island - Live Ecstatic Dance From Ometepe, Nicaragua)

My first published mix in a while is something a bit different than I normally post on this channel, though it has been the foundation of my life in recent years and inspiration behind beginning to create music many years ago.

Over the past year I've been disconnecting, recalibrating and attempting to go inward. One of my favorite modalities I have discovered during this time is breathwork.

To me this is the epitome of gratitude, as every breath we take is truly a gift.

At any moment we can access this life force to come back to our center, clear space and realize our true power.

I have seen profound healing take place through this practice and experienced it myself through sessions with Tristan Montoya and Kathryn Mayeaux during my time on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala.

In March I found myself going through a tough period. Fear in the collective consciousness was at an all-time high with lockdowns, I was going through a breakup, separated from my dogs and in an unfamiliar country away from what I had come to know as "home".

I was quickly reunited with this practice during my time with @momentomcollective which continued through the offerings at El Zopilote on Isla de Ometepe, Nicaragua. Each session served as a beautiful reminder that I was exactly where I needed to be.

It's been an interesting journey over the 6-7 months since then, but I would not trade it for anything.

I had the honor of being invited to collaborate at the Maderas Yoga Festival for a psychedelic breathwork journey on December 5.

When I say it is an honor to share music in this space, I truly mean it. These containers are some of the most vulnerable spaces I have found myself in, and the energy is beyond palpable. I am grateful to be able to hold space in this way.

My intention through curating this mix was to encourage people to tap into their internal rhythm, allowing their breath to be the guiding light with the music as a vehicle.

I encourage you to go inward while deeply listening. My wish is that this mix will allow you to peel back the protective layers that we construct around our hearts.
