Charles created a special plug-in chain in Pro Tools that added punch, impact, low end, pitch manipulation and much more. With this set of processes he was able to layer various sounds together to taste and export them to a stereo file with dozens of variations per file. The SG-43 Goryunov is a Soviet medium machine gun that was introduced during the Second World War. It was chambered for the 7.62×54mmR cartridge, and was introduced in 1943 as a replacement for the older M1910 Maxim machine guns. It was mounted on wheeled mounts, tripods and armored vehicles. In addition to World War II, SG-43 saw service in the Korean War with the Communist North Korean and Chinese forces.

he Recordist presents sound effects from the Zastava M53 Machine Gun. The M53 is a 7.92×57mm Mauser, air-cooled, belt fed, open bolt, recoil-operated machine gun with a quick change barrel.

After WWII, this MG 42 variant was built in Yugoslavia as the M53 machine gun using original German machinery, retaining the 7.92×57mm Mauser caliber. Because of this, the original weapon’s design features were retained, making the M53 a near exact copy of the German MG 42.

GunTales HD Professional Sound Effects Collection is a one of a kind collection of firearms recorded for the simple purpose of capturing the "report" or "reverb tail" from the guns. Included are small caliber handguns, two bolt action rifles (featuring the Barrett 50 BMG), a shotgun (with rifled slugs) and a AR-15 assault rifle. The first recording session took place on a wide open 400 acre ranch near the mountains and was recorded from the side and rear of the six guns at a medium and far distance. The Second session was recorded at a location in the mountains at a area called Canyon Gap. At an elevation of 3800 ft above sea level on a old logging road the microphones were placed close up, medium and far to capture the graceful mountian echo along with the explosive muzzle blast of the guns that reverberated off the rocks. With microphones pointed in many directions a diverse and unique report was obtained with each microphone capturing a different style of reverberation.

The idea behind this collection came to me after the many gun sessions I have worked on here in North Idaho. I always thought that it would be really cool to record just the "report" from the gun firing into the remote mountains and fields here. I have recorded many guns up close and personal and decided that it was time to record only the tickling of the air molecules bouncing around the beautiful and isolated locations i've visited. 

There are no "extreme close up" sounds that capture the mechanics of the firearms in this collection with the idea being you can add whatever close up sound to fit your needs. The collection includes the final mastered versions along with the source files used to create the mastered sounds.

Presenting the next chapter in my journey recording Mother Nature electrifying the sky. Thunderstorm 5 is here!. 30+ storms recorded over the last 4 years. 85 brand new thunder sounds including close dry lightning, deep booming rumbles and gentle rolling claps. Stereo and Quad!

Thunderstorm 5 is the first collection of storms recorded at 32-Bit/96k. 32-Bit allowed me to not worry about the input gain for the most part. Thunder and lightning can really test your gear on how much gain it can accept before totally overloading and clipping. The storms would be very far away, soft and booming then out of the blue can produce incredible audio energy and level. The Zoom F3 and F8nPro handled these drastic level changes easily without me riding the input gain on the recorders. The final files are delivered at 24-Bit/96k

Multiple microphone setups were used during most of the storms. I have a few choice locations around the property that allow me to place microphones or hand held recorders such as the PCM D100 facing South, North, East, West. With these sets I was able to cover up to three locations at one time. I also experimented with MKH8040ST ORTF Quad setups using one location with the microphone rigs close together and another location with the microphone rigs set far apart.

Thunderstorm 5 HD Pro

Presenting the highly anticipated sequel to Bullets HD Professional Sound Effects Library: Ultimate Bullet HD Professional. Over a year and a half in the making with thousands of rounds of ammunition shot, this one of a kind collection showcases higher caliber projectiles passing by inches from multiple sets of extended frequency response microphones.

Recorded in three unique locations with a variety of suppressed handguns and high powered suppressed rifles. The locations include a wide open 380 acre field, a farm ranch with a asphalt roadway and a high mountain dirt logging road. The distances the bullets were shot range from 300 feet to over 1000 feet. Most of the collection is recorded with two sets of stereo microphones and two mono microphones. The microphones were placed along the bullets path and on both sides. (See the diagram below for specific placement.) There were a few occasions where only a single XY stereo microphone was used because of the difficult weather and time constraints. Most of the bullets were shot from this distance: 1050 Feet (ft) 320 Meters (m) 350 Yards (yd).

Most bullet ricochet sound libraries include just the ricochet or impact. I decided to give you the whole event. A majority of the tracks include the muzzle blast, incoming pass by, impact, ricochet and echo tail even if it hits a tree far off in the distance. I decided to leave it up to you, the sound designer to pick and choose what part of the event to use in your work. Because suppressors were used for most of the recording sessions the background blast and impact echo are kept to a minimum.

Another important aspect of this collection is that you get the bullet event and nothing but the bullet event impacting and ricocheting off pavement, dirt, rocks, grass and snow. Again, it's up to you to add any other impact material from any source. With this collection you have pristine bullet source material to add to whatever you desire. Whether its metal, wood, or flesh I think it's much more effective to add that separate source in your sound design. The original Bullets HD Pro collection has quite a bit of "impact" source material available along with my other collections. Check them out, you may find additional material to sweeten these bullet sound effects.

Thunder Snow Storm

More than two years of recording has finally come to an end for this rain sound effects collection. Presenting Rural Rain HD Professional SFX Library. This is a unique collection of all natural rain tracks, nothing faked or staged, this is the real deal. Recorded at various locations in rural North Idaho this collection includes over 3 hours of interior and exterior perspectives.

Rural Rain offers 68 HD rain recordings in a variety of intensities on a number of surfaces, including dirt, gravel, foliage, tarp, wood deck, barn roofs and more. This library includes the soft sound of rain drops on puddles to torrential downpours on rooftops with gutters overflowing and everything in between. Some thunder rumbles also compliment the takes.

Recording rain has it's challenges as many of you may know and one of the most difficult aspects of recording the sound of rain is getting clean, detailed recordings free of obtrusive noises like cars, planes, animals, humans etc. This library was painstakingly recorded in very quiet environments, sometimes at night or during the colder seasons of the year. The storms that passed through here during the last couple of years brought some terrific torrential downpours and beautiful steady showers. Thunder also makes an appearance in some of the tracks along with some birds, they do need a bath now and then.

A portion of the library is from spontaneous storms that caught me by surprise so I used a high quality hand held recorder (Sony PCM D100 - they come in very handy) to quickly get in position to capture the intense downpours and soft rainfall that would magically appear out of nowhere. Sometimes, using the Sony PCM D100 recorder was the only way to record the rain as it was easy to place and keep from getting wet. A majority of the remaining sounds were recorded with a MKH-8040ST microphone setup either in XY or ORTF of both.

I hope you enjoy this collection of rain sound effects, I very much enjoyed recording it as rain is one of my favorite sounds. When auditioning the sounds try and listen and lower volumes as these types of sounds tend to be used as ambient background layers. Just adjusting the volume can bring out different aspects in the character of the rain.

Suppressed Weapons HD Pro

Presenting The M60 Machine Gun HD Professional Sound Effects Library, a multi-channel collection of 129 Broadcast WAV tracks recorded at 24-Bit 192kHz and 24-Bit 96kHz. The M60 is a belt-fed machine gun that fires the 7.62 mm NATO cartridge (.308 winchester) commonly used in larger rifles. The M60 used for this collection is a M60E3: An updated, lightweight version adopted in the 1980s. The M60E3 was introduced circa 1986 in an attempt to remedy problems with earlier versions of the M60 for infantry use. It is a lightweight, "improved" version intended to reduce the load carried by the gunner.

Presenting: The Hawk. One of the helicopters I've enjoyed recording the most is the Sikorsky UH-60A Blackhawk Helicopter. The machine is a reconditioned rotorcraft from military surplus and is the real deal. It has been updated and modified to be used as a heavy lift helicopter but it still has the traditional sound of the original military hardware.

I was granted exclusive access to the very expensive helicopter to record multiple track and balance tests at full throttle on the ground and in flight. I used a Schoeps MK4-MK8 M/S for the medium distant perspectives and was hand held so I could be mobile. I set a Sennheiser MKH-8040ST XY microphone close up and then medium close during the test starts and power down sequences. I set up my AT-835ST far away in the grass field next to the runway. I also set a Sony PCM D-100 and MKH-8040ST ORTF inside the Blackhawk for the interior perspectives. On other occasions I used a Sony PCM D1 for some distant perspectives and set the PCM D-100 outside the helicopter at a medium distance on the ground.

The helicopter was recorded on many different occasions and in a few locations. At times the Hawk was in a wide open field and other times it was in close proximity to buildings. There is very broad selection of perspectives and performances you can draw upon for sound design. I used the MKH-8040ST XY microphone on a boom pole for some of the pass bys and start ups and other times I used the Schoeps MK4-MK8 M/S microphone set.

The last time I was able to record the Hawk it was making a quick trip to the portable refueling station just across the street. I set up the MKH-8040ST XY and ORTF rigs at the take off location and I waited with the Schoeps M/S rig across the street at the airfield and recorded it flying in and setting down. While it was refueling and having a minor glitch repaired I drove back to get the MKH-8040ST microphone rigs and then placed them at the refueling area for the Hawk leaving. There was also a Sony PCM D-100 lurking around out there in the distance.

Presenting The M-249 Squad Automatic Weapon HD Professional Sound Effects Library, a multi-channel collection of 62 Broadcast WAV files recorded at 24-Bit 96kHz. The machine gun was recorded close up, medium and distant. You get a simple but wide selection of perspectives to choose from. Foley, Single and burst shots with multiple variations are included within the 68 WAV files.

If you would like to create your own combinations the individual source material is included with minimal processing and clean up. The multi-channel wav files are time aligned in mono and stereo. Also included are custom combinations created here in the studio so if you are under a tight deadline you can just grab your favorite takes and lay them into your timeline and with just a few tweaks you are done.

The M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, or SAW, is an individually portable, gas operated, magazine or disintegrating metallic link-belt fed, light machine gun with fixed headspace and quick change barrel feature. The M249 engages point targets out to 800 meters, firing the NATO standard 5.56mm cartridge. The SAW forms the basis of firepower for the fire team. The gunner has the option of using 30-round M16 magazines or linked ammunition from pre-loaded 200-round plastic magazines.

The SAW filled the void created by the retirement of the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) during the 1950s because interim automatic weapons (e.g. M-14E2/M16A1) had failed as viable “base of fire” weapons. The M249, is the American adaptation of the Belgian FN Minimi, a light machine gun manufactured by the Belgian company FN Herstal.

What started out as a projectile impact sound library morphed into a crazy collection of "breaking" and "pre-breaking" sound elements for sound designers. Over the last five years I recorded breaking all sorts of objects. The idea behind the library is to have the elements of a designed "destruction sound" separated and available to process, pitch and mix as you see fit.

From a wood barn being ripped apart, kicking bathroom doors in, dumping junk and debris, paper flying through the air, smashing glass, metal crashes and scrapes, frozen tarps cracking, wood destruction to large tree falls, this crazy set of sounds will help push your designs into overdrive. Also included are unique sounds like septic drainage tube rubs, large utility trailer moans, sharp paper hits and bubble wrap pops.

Broken HD Pro

This is Dixie, a very special English Bull Terrier with an amazing vocal ability that is unlike anything I have every heard. She is special because she is deaf and cannot hear what comes out of her mouth. She is loved and cared for by some friends here in town and they graciously allowed me to come to their home and record her. The Devil Dog HD Pro SFX Library contains over 800 individual Zombie-like sound effects recorded at 24-Bit 192kHz presented on 60 tracks.

Dixie makes the best noises when she is asleep dreaming or very tired and does not want to be bothered. She was very excited when I arrived so they tried to calm her down a little bit to see if she would make some of the amazing “alien” noises they say she makes. The sounds she made when I was in the room were great but after a while I went outside for 5 minutes and left the gear with them and they were able to get her to make some really cool noises. I was able to leave the recording gear overnight and got some really amazing close up sleeping sounds.

I used a Sennheiser MKH-416 and a MKH-8040 with the filter module set on a small stand. This combination is very good for this type of animal recording as the hyped-up top end of the MKH-416 works perfect for the normal pitched intense growls and barks while the MKH-8040 sounds amazing when pitched way down with a nice smooth top end and a monstrous low end. There are multiple distances for variety and dozens of variations on most tracks. Dixie can make sounds ranging from soft and subtle to over the top loud and vicious. She can purr like a kitten and snarl like an attack dog. I have never heard any animal make these kinds of noises especially a dog. Dixie got to know me after a few days and maybe next time I see here she will let me record her in her dream state.

Here is a thunderstorm I recorded with a Sennheiser MKH-8040ST at 1:30AM on April 24, 2012. The unpredictable nature of thunder is that you never know what you are going to get. I usually hope for the best and even have my front entrance modified with removable baffles to mute the rain drips but every now and then I can get some real nice claps and lightning strikes that need little to no clean up to make them sound good. They are what they are. These gems also come from recording a storm at night when it is really nice and quiet here. Since I cannot command the thunder gods to play at night I am at their mercy as to when I record. So, sometimes I have to record during the day. This track has some rain and wind but it makes for a nice soundscape.

The best thunder I record happens when the storm is going around the ranch maybe to the North or from the South to the East. My recording location (right in front of my door) faces North so when a thunderstorm comes in from the West or South I really hope it makes a direction change and skirts around me. When this happens I usually get many takes without the heavy rain and wind associated with a severe thunderstorm. The best times are at the start of the storm and right after it passes. I have witnessed hours of thunder to the North and South of me without rain and wind but that is very rare.

After 5 long years and dozens of field recording sessions, GUNFIRE HD Professional Sound Effects Library is finally here! GUNFIRE is a massive, one of a kind gun sound collection that will knock your socks off. It's the gun sound library you've always wanted: Distant shots! From 25 meters to a mile, these sounds are organized by caliber and location.

Tha actual gun models were not that important in the making of this library. I was mainly going after the caliber size and how it interacted with the environment. There are a wide assortment of calibers from 9mm to .50 BMG. Single and fully automatic shots are included. There also are random bursts from both semi-auto and full-auto weapons.

Gunfire HD Pro

After nine long months and over thirty recording sessions it's finally done! This final release adds Set-4 to the collection and includes sounds of bullets being shot into a old Bronco SUV. They were recorded inside and out... and from all sides. After many weather delays and scheduling conflicts the end is here. During the last week of October the remaining sounds for this comprehensive collection of bullet sound effects were recorded with a multi-microphone setup in the wilds of North Idaho.

The trick to recording a large portion of this library is using subsonic and custom made ammunition with the guns. Most of the bullets are traveling 710 feet per second. This allows me to postion the microphones in just the right spot without having a loud muzzle blast. Sometimes I even used baffling around the target area to lessen the shot sound. Even though my goal is to have just the ricochet or pass by recorded, sometimes I include the muzzle blast in the file whether it can be avoided or not. It can make for a cool sound effect and it gives you a few gunshots to play with also.

The library is organized into 3 sections: designed, processed and the original source files. The designed portion is basically taking some of the raw files and processing them for importing into sessions that I mix and mangle. They are over the top, larger than my own reality and hopefully yours also. The processed files are amped up with transient enhancers, compression, EQ and pitch manipulation. They are derived from the original source files but most are not exact duplicates of the number of takes and sequence. For the processing, I only used the takes I thought would work well for the feel I wanted. And finally, there are the original source files for you to process.

Bullets HD Pro SFX Library

The Recordist presents the third installment of the famed BULLETS HD Professional Sound FX Series. BULLETS 3 has taken four years of intricate and complicated recording sessions of sub-sonic and super-sonic ammunition impacting and bouncing off a multitude of surfaces. This sound effects library is a ricochet dream come true! Many calibers and locations were uitilized to provide the sound designer with a wide range of options when designing bullet sounds.

Included are intricate designs of impacts, ricochets, pass bys and whizzes by yours truly and the source material used to create the complex and hard hitting sounds. The source material was recorded with high end, extended frequency microphones and custom hand crafted ammunition. Suppressors were used on a variety of rifles including a AK-47, AR-15, .308 hunting rifle, 9mm black gun, 22LR, 300 Blackout and more.

Bullets 3 HD Pro

Helicopters 2 HD Pro continues the journey started with Helicopters 1 back in 2015. After 3 years of going to the local airport and recording various rotorcraft I can finally reveal to you this stunning set of 97 sounds from a wide variety of helicopters.

Included are close, medium and distant passes along with turbine engine starts, shut downs and hovering (tons of "Blade Chop"). The helicopters  were recorded arriving and departing the airport and performing photo shoot maneuvers. All the sounds in this collection are from a exterior perspective. Recorded in stunning XY and MS decoded stereo with high end microphones.

Highlights include: very fast passes, aggressive approaches, graceful hovering, extremely close up starts with ground runs and overhead departing. I poured my heart and soul into this collection and hope you enjoy them as much as I did recording them. (More to come...)

Helicopters 2 HD Pro

The Recordist is proud to present a totally unique and much sought after collection of sounds from belted ammunition. Featuring four common calibers used in a variety belt-fed machine guns. Calibers include: 30-06, 5.56x45mm (.223 Remington), 7.62x51mm (308 Winchester) and 50 BMG. The brass shell casings & disintegrating links were recorded separately falling on concrete, dirt, brick and wood surfaces. Create your own custom mixes and combinations from the cleanly recorded ammunition tumbling. Single shell casings and links were also recorded so the sound designer can make their own "burst" combinations. Layer and sequence both brass and links to create the perfect "after shot" falling soundscape. When designing sounds for a M1919, M249 SAW, M60 or a M2 Browning machine gun this collection has you covered.

Also included are tons of belt handling foley. General handling, hand grabs, drops and shakes of single and multiple belts were carefully captured for a unique sound that can be added to most any ammunition handling scene. The belts were also recorded being placed and pulled out of a large and small metal ammunition container. Various ammunition container sounds are also included.

AMMO: Belts, Brass And Links HD Pro

Presenting Gunscapes HD Professional SFX Library. Large caliber rifles, shotguns, pistols, machine guns and assault rifles were recorded at 24-Bit 96kHz. As many of you might know I have been working on a gun sound effects library for the last 3 1/2 years. At this moment I feel there is enough material finalized and ready to let loose. This has been a massive undertaking and I am very happy with the results so far.

The sounds produced by guns here in North Idaho are quite unique and that is how I came up with the name of the library — Gunscapes. A majority of the guns I recorded produced what I call a “Gun Landscape” style of response. If this sounds strange, then maybe it is. The reverb tails from the guns in many of the locations I recorded can be used as stand alone design elements or layered with other gun sounds you may have on hand to create the gun sound effect you desire. Lush, full bodied, echoey, bouncy, tight, sharp… it’s in there. A majority of this collection was recorded with multiple microphones and some were recorded with just a single stereo microphone setup. (Sometimes I spontaneously tagged along on mountain expedition trips with expert shooters and could only bring one stereo microphone rig).

Large caliber rifles, shotguns, pistols, machine guns and assault rifles were recorded at 24-Bit 96kHz. Stage 2 includes suppressed weapons in a variety of calibers. Included are “processed” versions along with the original “source” files. Having the processed versions allows you to quickly “drop in” a gun sound if you have a tight deadline or you just like the sound and it works for you. There are a multitude of various “pumped up” sounds that were derived from the source and multiple takes were mixed and mangled to hopefully give you a broad pallet of sounds to sculpt your masterpiece. As with the source files, you can layer the different multi-microphone processed files together for maximum impact.

Ultimate Fire SFX Library

I finally got around to recording some wind with the Rycote ORTF system and a Sennheiser MKH8040 Stereo Pair. I used the microphone on a long boom pole and stood under some beautiful fir trees I have on my property. The wind was gusting just right, not too soft and not too strong and it made the trees sway back and forth. The stereo image is very wide and even. There is also a distant Raven that chimes in at the end, they do not like to be excluded or they will swoop down and grab your cat if you have one.

Wind Through Fir Trees ORTF MKH8040ST

The AK: Kalashnikov Rifles is comprehensive library of single-shot and full-automatic fire from a variety of legendary Kalashnikov assault rifles. Modern versions of this classic weapon are also included. Recorded with multiple microphones and at various distances to give you a wide variety of angles to use. Recorded at my favorite locations around North Idaho. They include a wide open field, forest and a ranch that has fantastic detail and character in the echo tail. As a bonus, suppressed shots with subsonic and supersonic ammunition are included.

Special composite sounds are also included for quick inclusion into your work. If you are strapped for time or feel the composite sounds fit your sound design needs, go for it! They aim to please. Trucks And Vans HD Professional is a unique collection of dump trucks, pickup trucks and delivery vans driving on dirt surfaces. Over the last 6 years I placed hand held recorders and microphones in my driveway and along the road hoping to get delivery vans and trucks in the area. I was fortunate many times to get clean recordings of packages being delivered to my home. I was able to record a gravel delivery to top off my driveway and a very cool sounding jet fule pump truck as it was fueling a private jet. Actions include: arrive, depart, pass by, starts and stops. Introducing Firearm Foley HD Pro Sound Effects Library. This is a massive collection of gun foley sound effects recorded at 24-Bit 96kHz over a five year period here in my North Idaho studio and in the field.
