Giizhigookwe (Sky Woman) is a song of vision, trance, dreaming...whatever you want to call it...that I associate with the Moon.  Giizhigookwe in my culture, was the Creator of Turtle Island as she descended from the Sky to the world that was water and landed upon a great Turtle's back.  She painted the rim of its shell with earth and that earth grew to become the land we now live upon.  That's the short version.

Binesiikaa means Thunder or Thunderstorm in my language.  This song was really written as sort of a meditative piece.  The Thunders live in the West and are a powerful medicine.  I am always excited when I hear them coming off the lake and put out my tobacco for them.

The Cost

A few years ago I was asked to write a song for a proposed Leonard Peltier tribute CD.  This is it. **EDIT**  As Peltier's defence committee fell apart and new evidence came to light implicating him in not only the deaths of the FBI agents but possibly Annie Mae Aquash, I struggled with this track and what to do with it.  It is a piece of music I'm quite proud of in one sense, but also have a lot of uneasy feelings about.  I had thought about erasing it from the catalog but a friend pointed out to me that just because the narrative changes in a way we don't like, we don't burn the books and shoot the author.  I'm still working on making sense of that but anyways.....I decided to leave it here for now.  BUT....I want to make it clear that I am in no way associated with LP or the LPDC nor am I in any way endorsing him.  Miigwetch! AJ
