DJ BIO
Julian Bevan caught the music bug at age 14, fronting the midwestern punk band Sluggo, sharing the stage with bands like The Dead Kennedys, 7 Seconds, and JFA. He started DJing on his Brooklyn college radio station in 1988, immersing his ears in Hip Hop, Funk and Dancehall Reggae. He worked the downtown NYC club and lounge circuit heavily in the 90s, playing regularly at spots like Sybarite, Lucky Strike, Toast, Life, Speeed, Lotus, Limelight, as well as a long running residency at Don Hill’s with DJ Jules Gayton called Soul Sunday Lounge. These were mostly Hip Hop, Reggae and Rare Groove gigs, with the occasional after hours House and Disco set. Julian also toured regularly with Vibe Magazine, and was the DJ in the short-lived Haitian band Vodu 155 (Island Records). At the end of 90s, when bottle service had ruined New York nightlife and Hip Hop really began to suck, he turned his focus back to House and Disco, soon becoming a resident at Bang The Party – Brooklyn’s landmark Deep House weekly. This led to guest spots at underground parties all over the 5 boroughs, including Melting Pot, Soulgasm, BKNY, and The Just Right loft parties in The Bronx. Julian maintains his own site with an archive of mixes from the last 30+ years – all free to download and regularly updated with new mixes spanning all genres.

This week on There Is No Planet Earth Radio - I’m very excited to welcome guest DJ Tedd Patterson - For this week i’ll be airing a live recording  of his from Club USA 1993 

“Tedd Patterson is house music royalty. He has headlined with the top DJs in the world; he has released music on the most respected labels in the industry; and he has played a pivotal role in the spread of house music across the globe. Tedd’s boldly creative sets at the Magic Sessions (Miami WMC) inspired generations of clubbers and DJs, conferring on him legendary status alongside Tony Humphries and Louie Vega.

Tedd’s been spinning since the late 70’s with his ethos of “no musical boundaries—only musical journeys,” and his style owes as much to the past as to the present. His distinctive sound has earned him not only a huge, global fan base but also a career of impressive breadth and longevity. He has headlined Ministry of Sound in London, Pacha in Ibiza, and Panorama Bar in Berlin. Tedd has also brought his signature sound to Moscow, Tokyo, Montreal, and Naples.

Tedd gathered a following early on in the NYC music scene, with underground East Village parties at Sugar Babies and Save the Robots that have now evolved into regular gigs at destinations like Output, Flash Factory, and Le Bain. His Vibal party at uber-cool hotspot Cielo led to a 13- year residency and a whole new fan base. Tedd was chosen to play the first US Glitterbox at House of Yes with Simon Dunmore and also performed a ground-breaking seven-hour performance for visual artist Nick Cave at the Park Avenue Armory.

Tedd’s work in A&R and Promotion at Emotive Records during the heyday of New York dance music expanded his musical talents beyond the DJ booth and eventually led to his production debut. “Welcome to the Magic Session” was released on the iconic Strictly Rhythm label, and collaborations with heavyweights Eric Kupper, Pete Heller, and Chus & Ceballos followed soon after. His edits of Black Science Orchestra, Alicia Keyes, and Bjork, have gained cult status in the house underground.”

As part of our celebration of 21 years of club culture, we're featuring some of our favourite DJs from around the world, highlighting the parties and clubs most important to their lives in dance music. 

The Loft is one of the most storied and sacred spaces in dance music history. Founded in Manhattan in 1970 by the late David Mancuso, The Loft was a party unlike any other: relaxed and gently psychedelic, with pristine audiophile sound played at a medium volume level kinder to the ears. You didn't need to blast the music to appreciate the sonic perfection of the music and the system it was played on. Over the decades, Mancuso invented his own influential style of DJing, letting the records breathe rather than mashing them together. Mancuso, who died in 2016, had many acolytes over the years, perhaps none more prominent than Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy, who provides our final 2122 birthday RA Podcast: a tribute to The Loft.

Murphy has an impressive resume without The Loft: she's a long-time radio DJ, founded the Classic Album Sundays series and started her own Lucky Cloud Loft Party in London, in collaboration with Mancuso. Her DJing style, slow, steady and respectful of the music, channels those years spent at The Loft, and her RA Podcast embodies the disco-influenced sounds that define the party, played with care, love and reverence.
