Based out of Portland, Oregan, the producer and multi-instrumentalist Devin Kroes has spent the last six years and counting tapping into a variety of psybient styles across a choice collection of tracks. Ahead of his Breathe EP release through the Danktronics platform, the Rust was given the opportunity to premiere the effusive track “Bloom”, featuring the soul-drenched sax lines of ST4RFOX.

Wielding a pristine level of clarity and tonal balance, Kroes dances between lush vocal samples and vibrant layers of synthesis. Each passing phrase paints the next hue across the landscape of the song, building on additive arrangements and fleshing out the literal breath of the track. At high point of the musical narrative, ST4RFOX breaks into a spirited saxophone run that ties off “Bloom” with a proper resolution, leaving the track to fade out between ripples of waning chords. Over the past 10 years, Adam Westover, better known as Ovoid, has been creating symphonic musical adventures that span combine modern musicality with cutting-edge audio production and engineering. Psychedelic and mind bending, Ovoid’s music never disappoints; impossible to pass up and captivating in form, his compositions cultivate a distinct hallmark of the audiophile experience while bringing electrifying bass music to dance floors. As such, The Rust is honored to once again host his work, this time featuring the exclusive premiere of his track, “Desert Planet”, from his latest EP, Apocryphal. 

“Desert Planet” opens with elements of thick and decorative percussion. The cerebral LFOs dance in the background while building the melody with strums from a filtered guitar, and each embellished note elucidates deep echoes and fleshy reverb. Adam shines bright when incorporating many musical disciplines into his EPs; His creativity often radiates with nods to Eastern musical stylings and syncopated rhythms. He is constantly and dynamically evolving his tonal space and creating musical environments that conjure imagery of spaces that are both compressed and tight, and that explode into wide and galloping expanses of sound, and “Desert Planet” channels each of these distinct characteristics with ease. With the full release scheduled March 4th, the full release of Apocryphal is close on the coattails of this high-impact single.

Searching for their stride in self-expression, the Detroit-based songwriter and producer Grayskale has been steadfastly exploring the wide array of bass music styles and rhythms across his time as a public-facing musician. With a clear attraction to clarity and structure, his humble catalog already displays a munificent bounty of production knowledge and compositional finesse. Consequently, The Rust is incredibly excited to premiere the namesake single to his forthcoming first album, String Theory.

“String Theory” is a distinctly narrative stroll, fusing a focused message with syncretic sound design. The first half of the track features a whimsical orator giving us the foundational argument of string theory, parallel to the gradual rise in chord progressions and swelling percussive rides in the background. At the track’s midway point, it cleverly dovetails into a staccato dance of pulsing low end and flighty melodies. At it’s apex, “String Theory” displays the blissful colorways capable when bass music is designed to be particularly rich in harmonics and fidelity, and has us eagerly awaiting the full dive into the String Theory LP.

The Oxidized compilation series is a charity project we have been working on since the inception of The Rust Music, with Oxidized, Vol. 1 being our very first label release in February 2017. At the end of each year we select a new charity, aid organization, or non-profit, to which all proceeds from the series are donated. In the past we have donated to organizations focusing on natural disaster aid, environmental restoration and preservation, as well as civil/human rights advocates and COVID-19 relief efforts on local, national, and international levels. 2022 proceeds from the Oxidized series will be donated to support women’s rights to healthcare and access to abortion, with this year’s donation to be determined towards the end of 2023. 

Across the last 6 years, we've recurrently tapped into a network of both our roster talent and our close associates across the experimental electronic music spectrum to craft our first two Oxidized compilations. Now, for the final entry in the Oxidized Trilogy, we've brought together 32 producers, songwriters, and musicians from the US, the UK, Germany and Georgia to craft 28 tracks that cross through a medley of motifs in Hip-Hop, Drum & Bass, Downtempo, and more. Hailing from Tallahassee, Florida, the upstart producer Langwidj has been coming correct with a smattering of glitch-hop and splayed-out bass music for the last few years. Continuing their dovetailed combination of happy accidents, artifacts, and sculpted synthesis, the latest plate of Langwidj tracks balance weight and impact with abundant compositional risk. pheel., aka Philip Gallo, hails from the east coast and is currently residing in Denver. Since he moved in 2016, he has immersed himself in developing a unique perspective on bass music, drawing influences from a mixture or his roots as well as the local Colorado community. pheel. strives to take his audience on a sonic adventure with each set, guiding them through equal parts hip-hop and “bass music”. This release continues his testament to versatility, blending acoustic instrumentation with mechanical sound design – exemplifying the depth of his understanding of the craft through extraordinary musicality and creative mind. 

Maxfield's repertoire covers a wide range of grooves and emotional landscapes, and a formal release from the high-energy end of the spectrum is long overdue. Boondoggle draws inspiration not only from dance floor energy, but also from the world of animals and nature – the mind-crushing awesomeness of which is enough to send even the strongest of us into a verklempt tizzy.

The Rust Music is honored to present our third compilation, Auburn Etch. Departing from the variable genres of our previous Oxidized compilations, this collection of music is a full service package of brolic and boisterous bass music. We’re tapping into the global reservoir of talent for this release, presenting producers from the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark, Poland, and Australia.

Featuring high-octane rhythms, visceral sound design, brutish breakdowns, and break-neck musical phrasing, each track on this compilation represents a one-inch-punch of high fidelity  audio production. Danny Grooves, Rumpistol, and Easyjack have lent their production wizardry and impeccable rhythm to the compilation, anchoring a release that showcases the unhindered skillsets of 5AM, Maxfield, Wessanders, and a host of other young-blooded producers with a tenable ferocity for meticulously processed synthesis.

With sharper edges, elevated sound design and a new posse of collaborators, MALAKAI comes correct on his fourth EP, Odd Views. It’s been more than two years since the New York City-based producer first released with The Rust, but in some ways it feels like a lifetime ago.

On these four tracks it’s plain to hear that MALAKAI’s sound design and songwriting have improved and his intent has sharpened. The sonic material itself isn’t revolutionary, but the subtle ways he moves and shapes the sounds gives attitude to the songs. Strong as ever is MALAKAI’s ability to communicate a feeling with melody, harmony, and note choice. Only now, the feelings are different. He’s deviated ever so slightly from his usual earthy, acoustic, mystical motifs. The void that remains is filled with something grittier, more urban, more direct.

His friends have changed, too, It’s reflected in the posture of this EP, which features Thought Process, pheel., and cuts from Bogtrotter. These producers, who are heavily influenced by hip-hop, deliver great bounce and buoyancy on their features. It’s still MALAKAI’s signature sound - grazing along, moving forward with swing and without haste. Not quite glitch hop, not quite dub, not quite hip-hop, but a home brew with all these ingredients. The edges are again sharper, the movements more crisp. There’s less to think about and more to groove on.

Music from the Danish producer Jens Christiansen aka Rumpistol has never been conventional. It was his ability to create experimental yet accessible electronic music that first earned him notoriety over a decade ago. Now, a new five-track collection called In My Room finds the producer leaning ever further into that absence of orthodoxy. In My Room takes artistic risk and combines threads from many electronic styles. It showcases non-linear songwriting, bold textures, and uninhibited array of sonic material. Yet despite Rumpistol’s endless tinkering and flirtations with the edge, In My Room still offers a deeply comforting listening experience.

Tempos and moods are fluid throughout this release, but the common denominator is a sense of wonder. The sort of wonder surrounding something ultimate and grand that we can’t quite grasp, yet we know is out there. The sort of wonder that surfaces when we’re lost in thought alone in our room. Rumpistol can fit so many distinct, disparate sounds into his music without creating a crowded mix. Each element has room to breathe. In My Room offers another great example of this dynamic.

In the past several years, Jens has been working with his jazz and world fusion supergroup Kalaha, and maneuvering through the United States’ bass music circuit. The sounds of these two different worlds appear to have heavily influenced In My Room, and as such, it represents a new evolution of Rumpistol’s music.

For our 38th installment of the Rusted Rhythms series, Rust family favorites pheel. and parkbreezy have resurrected their Featherbed set to showcase loads of original tracks and a few choice flips and remixes. Co-founders of the all.Lo label, and the brains behind the Morning Coffee project, these two producer/dj's have their fingers on the pulse of trip-hop's many varieties, creating their signature blends through an infusion head-nod fundamentals with ample servings of saturated bass weight.

Right from the jump, they zero in on the vibe of the hour, delivering smooth cuts of collaged melodies and brackish drum breaks. Their own individual styles meet at the nexus of broken beats and juiced-up sub frequencies, balancing the high of a listening experience with the pull of a physical experience. They were even gracious enough to mix in a Groovsauce track, courtesy of their live project with Thought Process. Through and through, Rusted Rhythms Vol. 38 is a gift to both heads in the know and new fans alike, with the simple assurance that you'll be coming back for more as soon as you finish your first serving.
