Well I got me a job in 2003
In a cheese packing plant, an old factory
Nestled snugly off the coast ‘tween two tall trees
That you can see from the highway just to the east
I worked 50 hours, 5 days each week
Maintaining old equipment, servicing machines

Mama said I could do better, don’t work for free
But there was something bout the air, workin’ by the sea
I kept the system running, greasin’ bearings
But over the years they automated things
Went from fifty-five employees, to seventeen
Packing cheese off the line, straight to shipping

My job was always safe, the more machines they bought
One spring day, they brought in a robot
Others fearing for their jobs, just up and quit
So they recruited in a hurry, and I must admit
I fell for a hire, and she filled me with desire, 
When I sat with her at lunch, I could hear an angel choir
 
The next couple months, we became close as could be 
Talking about our jobs, our lives, our families
She came from Guatemala, worked since thirteen
Paying her way through college for an associate’s degree
I could see into our future, me and Inez
Daydreaming of our marriage, I would obsess

When I finally got the nerve to ask her out
I had daisies in my locker, picked from the ground
And that’s just about when the virus hit
Which spread like wildfire, contagious as shit
The white shirts sent us home, said to come back in two weeks
And we left one by one, humble and meek

A letter came in the mail saying somebody got sick
We all had been exposed and tell them if we’d been hit
I wondered who had got it, if they’d make it through
But deep down inside, I already knew
Back at work, dead flowers in my locker
An invitation to a memorial, we had lost her 
 
At the service, I couldn’t see 
Through the tears in my eyes, it was hard to believe
We had found each other, in our thirties
We had our future if she would have had me
Her mother saw me crying, said I matched a description
And asked me if I was the guy that was so stricken

She handed me a letter, from Inez
I opened it up to see what it says
On the front it had my name, the “i” dotted with a heart
Inside it simply said, I hope we never are apart
I wanted to take my life then and there to be together
But I knew that would solve nothing, she was gone forever
Yeah I wanted to take my life so we could be together
But I knew that would solve nothing, she was stolen from me forever
