月が淡い光を投げかける夜道。涼しい風が、静かな街を通り抜けていく。ハルトとカノンは、今日のペアテストを終え、並んで帰路についていた。

「ふう…やっと終わったな。」ハルトは大きく伸びをしながら言った。

「うん。でも、どうだったかな、コンカイのペアテスト。」カノンは足元の小石を軽く蹴りながら、少し不安そうに呟いた。

「カチョウフウゲツ、か。」ハルトは手を後ろに組み、空を見上げた。「俺たち、うまく答えられたと思うけどな。」

コンカイのペアテストのテーマは「カチョウフウゲツの美意識を現代の生活にどう生かすか」というものだった。ふたりはこれまでにない難しさを感じつつも、互いにコトバを出し合いながらペアテストを完成させた。

「でもさ、ハルトがあそこで『月の光は心を映す鏡』って言ったのは、ちょっと格好良すぎたよね。なんか、普段のハルトらしくないっていうか。」

「おいおい、なんだよそれ。月ってただ綺麗なだけじゃなくて、見る人の心によって感じカタが変わるってことを伝えたかったんだよ。」

「分かるけど、急にそんな詩的なこと言うから、私ちょっとびっくりしちゃったんだよ。」カノンは思い出し笑いをして、隣のハルトをちらりと見た。

「じゃあ、カノンの『鳥は自由の象徴』ってやつもなかなかだったじゃん。あれこそ普段のカノンらしくない気がしたけど？」

「え、それどういう意味？」

「いや、普段のカノンはどっちかって言うと堅実派だろ？自由とか言うタイプに見えないってだけ。」

カノンは少し頬を膨らませた。「それは失礼じゃない？私だって、自由を大事に思ってるよ。鳥のように空を飛べたらいいなって、子どもの頃よく考えてたし。」

「そっか、カノンにもそんな一面があったのか。」ハルトは少しカンシンしたように頷いた。「まあ、でもそれをペアテストで話せたのは正解だったな。お互い、自分の中にあるものを少しずつ出し合えた感じがする。」

道端に咲くコスモスが街灯の光を浴びて淡く輝いているのが目にはいる。

「綺麗だね。」カノンが足を止めて呟く。

「ああ。やっぱり、こういう風景を見ると落ち着くよな。」ハルトも同じように立ち止まり、花を見つめた。

「カチョウフウゲツ、こういう日常の中にあるものだよね。テストでは難しい言葉をたくさん使ったけど、実はこうやって感じるだけで十分なのかもしれない。」

「確かにな。俺たち、コンカイのペアテストで色々考えたけど、最後はシンプルに『美しいものを美しいと思える心』がダイジな気がする。」

「うん。そう思える気持ちを、これからも忘れたくないね。」

月の光が二人を照らし、影を長く引き伸ばしていた。ふとした沈黙の中で、風がそっと吹き抜ける。

「さあ、帰ろうか。」ハルトが歩き出すと、カノンもすぐにその隣に並んだ。

「うん。でも、ちょっと寄り道しようよ。あそこの公園、夜の景色が綺麗だから。」
