the crunch texture in that bass is real tasty. the tones in general are impressive.

An early work from the band, "Where The Tall Poppies Grow" offers an interesting contrast. On the one hand there's a sprawling sense of space embodied by Iceland's bleak landscapes, on the other, the deep resonant bass lines of  Bjarne Guðjohnsen, who grew up listening to his father's dancehall reggae collection where booming bass was such a feature.

Where The Tall Poppies Grow by Laxá

On receiving their masters from the studio, the Laxá realized "Seven Year's Dust" had been recorded in mono, and with the studio unwilling to "fix" the track, they decided they liked it just the way it was.

By chance the band had stumbled on their sound. A sound that would evolve over the coming months. 

The mono recording forced everything together in the mix, each instrument layering on top of other creating a wall of sound the band liked.

You can also hear on this track the first hint of the 60s sensibilities that would be more fully developed on their arrival in San Francisco.

Every Falling Leaf by Jeremias Langsämmer

Sometimes you just dispense with the niceties and make a glorious noise. Such is the case with Laxá's "Better Angels". 

Recorded in a derelict swimming pool off Sloat, the sonics were perfect. Swirling guitars, distant drums and distorted keyboards  captured the dereliction. The crumbling graffitied concrete walls echoed to the sound of a band both of, and not of, their time. The low buzz throughout the track is the sound of sampled traffic savagely distorted.

As darkness fell, a few curious passers by stopped to listen, witnesses to a singular happening in place and time.

Better Angels by Laxá

When the band found an old cassette tape beneath a loose floorboard they didn't expect it to turn into "Stone Tape". Full of haunting noise and swirling guitars, Laxá sampled and reversed the found sounds that crackled from their stereo to create the track you're about to hear.

The energy that seemed to be in the air was deeply emotional and traumatic, seeming to recall past events that were "recorded" onto the very fabric of the building they were in. 

The band quickly set up their gear to capture the moment.  Immediately the temperature of the room dropped significantly, giving the band and the song an urgency as they sought to release and replay these captive "recordings" from the stone tape.
