I live in Montreal West and the radio station in my kitchen is tuned 24/7 to Radio Station K103.7 located on the Kahnawake Indian Reservation.  One day a song by Garland Jeffreys was playing and my poetic juices started flowing. This song was the end result. Hope you enjoy.


                                                  Dominique Is Stoned


                                                       
As Dominique looks out his window
a song comes on the radio
it’s Garland Jeffreys singing to some senorita
saying something about the CIA.
Well it’s three o’clock in the afternoon
and he’s trying to write a tune
about what the Master said
when He turned stones into bread.
But between the words and the smiles
tears flow every once in a while
for he knows that the Masters’ chains
are the slaves’ master - it’s all a game. 

And Dominique 
Dominique                                      
is stoned

Dominique does his best to understand
why the dealers get the upper hand
but he knows that hope turns to crime
in the ghetto even the shadows rhyme
as the children play in the lions den
all in the name of money rubles and yen
and on Sunday it’s “In God We Trust
thank you Jesus for dying for us.”
But between the nightmares and the dreams
his hopes and schemes like diamonds gleam
for he knows that when push comes to shove
we all need someone to love.

And Dominique
is stoned

Dominique spends most his free time
trying to change water into wine
and watching the changes of the colours
he’d like to touch a guru - even a saviour
meet the King of Kings - the Queen of Queens
before the curtains draw the final scene
and the crowd yells crucify - crucify
another false one - he must die
but between the visions and burning bushes
uppers and downers and hip-hop rushes
he knows the day - the day will come
when everyone will touch The Sun.
