Horizons

Movement

OK, I admit it, I'd been listening to a lot of Tycho when I started this tune. The whole idea of a big happy lead-synth drove this tune from start to finish. It's probably most representative of the music I created a while back; overtly optimistic and full of sunshine.

Analogise

A melancholic piano thing I wrote a while back, whilst staying at a friends house. We'd stay up late, drinking single malts and listen to 'The Stars of the Lid' and 'Gonzalez'.  Those influences seemed to have rubbed off here.

The title refers to the general photographic rule of keeping things in simple measures of three. The three piano lines throughout this piece are supposed to hint at that, maintaining simplicity at it's heart. 

The counterpoint to this simplicity though, is a series of cross-rhythms (a 5/4 beat)running throughout till the end. Hope you like it.

The Law of Thirds

I've always loved an analog polysynth's ability to create powerful hypnotic filtered sounds, sometimes only using one chord. Here my attempt to tackle a heavily swung house tune attempts to maintain the this same idea,repeating, but never actually looping. Each part is a single recording; but the drive really comes from the swing, choosing groove over melody as the primary motivation.

Switch

It's always a wonderful surprise when a track arrives, complete, within only a few minutes or so. 'Horizons' is just such a track. One day I turned on the Novation Bass Station II, and out came this tune in only one take (well, two technically). I just played from start to end, and stacked up the two primary parts, then roughly mixed it. In a sense, it started a new journey leading to the album now titled 'Horizons'. The premise being: What if I never pressed stop when recording parts? just let them be, what they will be.

TheLighthouse

There's more than a slight hint here of another persona of mine in this tune. In juxtaposition though, the focus moves to analog, as much as possible without loosing a sense of the  abrasive nature of the sound. The image is of the tune being played live at London's Koko.
