Episode #3: Dokowala

Headbangers rejoice! In Episode Four, War&Co. puts our heads in a guillotine and keeps the pain coming with a heavy mix of dubstep and bass!

Versa: What do you value as a DJ?
War&Co: I love being able to watch people get down and dance and seeing their enjoyment come out of something that I’m creating.  I value the love of the community and being able to express myself without judgment.

V: What do you feel are your strengths as a DJ?
W: I feel like my main strength as a DJ is being able to blend a mix of different genres within Electric Dance Music (EDM) without making it sound too hectic and all over the map.  I love double dropping Riddim songs paired up with classic Dubstep, and then going right into some Trip hop or Break-beat.  One of my favorite things is just having experimental mixing sessions and finding songs from different genres that work well together.
 
V: What do you feel are your weaknesses?
W: I feel my main weakness would be rushing myself on transitions/moving a little to quickly sometimes. I’ve only been mixing for about two years so I still have a lot of practice and work to do!

V: Why do you DJ (what motivates you)?
W: I’ve been playing instruments since I was 5 years old, started with piano then drums and guitar.  My good friend Evan Chagnon introduced me to EDM about 3 years ago and then invited me to go down to Birmingham Alabama for Bassnectar NYE 360 16/17 and I decided to tag along.  As soon as I walked out of that building I knew I wanted to do something like that and start expanding my musical talents.  We got a mixer and just started practicing and figuring out just how everything worked. Since then I’ve been practicing almost daily and pushing myself to become a better artist in all aspects of music.

V: What are some of your favorite genres to spin? Least favorite?
W: Some of my favorite genres to spin are breakbeat, dubstep, trip hop, riddim, old school/new school rap and hip-hop.  I’d say my least favorite genres to spin would be house and trance.  Personally I’ve found spinning more upbeat or heavy music allows me to be more creative with my options in terms of double drops and transitioning.

V: If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring DJ what would it be?
W: Practice, practice, and practice some more.  It’s not nearly as easy as some say it is or makes it out to be.  Just keep pushing and take an hour or two everyday to just experiment with what you can make.  Also to constantly download new music so you don’t get stuck mixing the same songs over and over and get in a pattern.

7.	Who do you think has the best sound design?
W: I would have to say Tipper, I’m a sucker for those Functions.
V:Best DJ you’ve ever seen live?
W: I have to say Bassnectar, I’m always mind blown with how many lyrics or individual parts of songs he can throw together into one and make something so beautiful.  He never fails to surprise me with all of his unlimited combinations.
