It was someone's party, don't recall whose. In the skittles room at the back of the Caldecott Arms in the village of Long Lawford near Rugby in 1985. A Billy Idol song called 'Dancing with Myself' played as Spacemen 3 made zonking guitar sounds and dalek noises in a microphone. The band consisted of Natty on drums, Pete on fuzz tremelo feedback guitar and saz and Jason on guitar/vocals. They played three songs that night, but no-one listened to them apart from me and a friend. I think they tuned up for longer than they played. 30 August 1985.

On February 14, 1986 Spacemen 3 played a biker's party at the Imperial Hotel in Rugby. 'The Imp' was a hotel-come-pub; the backroom was regularly used for gigs, a folk club met there once a week, people used it for wedding receptions and small parties, it had 70's wallpaper, a small DJ booth and, on band nights like this, the tables were stacked up at the back. There were maybe sixty people in the room on this evening, but the gig didn't go very well. Almost as soon as the Spacemen sat down and started playing they stopped, a fuse blew and had to be replaced. It didn’t get much better; a string broke during the second song, by the third song the bikers, whose party it was, were well pissed off, their DJ requested a 'show of hands' to see if the band could continue, the DJ then went on to threaten to take a fan of the Spacemen 'outside'. After one last song the bikers told the band to “fuck off” and then their DJ put on some music the bikers presumably preferred. It all seems rather rude in hindsight, especially considering this was Valentine's Day and Natty had painted the words 'sound of love' in psychedelic writing on the skin of his bass drum. But, this isn't the sound of love, it's the sound of a tiny English town thirty years ago. A time when, for many young men in Rugby, a night out meant getting drunk and looking for a fight. Sticking Rugby's avant-garde outsider drone poets in the same room as the local rednecks and just kind of hoping everything would work out fine was admirably ambitious if doomed to fail. Natty played drums, cymbals, tambourine; Pete Kember, Burns bass, Burns electric guitar, broken strings; Jason Pierce, Fender Telecaster, singing; Pete Bain, maracas, bass.

High hopes and fierce ambitions for Rwanda. Next month, Rwanda is sending its first ever team to a Football World Championship - the under 17s competition being staged in Mexico. The importance of this for Rwandans is that these teenagers are representatives of the first generation born after the country's genocide in 1994.

With the team will go the dreams of the people who are determined to put their past behind them and transform their country for the better. But Graham Holliday wonders just how realistic some of these aspirations are.
