On Abandoning Certainty

This is a re-upload of a video I made back in May of 2010. I got a copyright claim on it because of the music I used, so I made a new soundtrack, re-recorded the script, and here is the result. I don’t necessarily agree with everything said in the video, but I thought it would be worth a re-upload.

In it, I discuss some thoughts on the idea of pseudoskepticism and people who pretend to utilize the terms "Skepticism" and "Atheism" as a weapon to sort of dismiss the ideas of others. It's a form of the argument from authority logical fallacy - "I'm a Skeptic, therefore you're wrong." There are some things that I don't necessarily still agree with, but they are more finer points of what I originally wrote, so I left the script intact.

Pseudoskepticism & Pseudo-Atheists

An interesting thought... does a spider understand why it weaves a web? An even more interesting thought - if a spider only weaves a web out of pure instinct and doesn't understand the correlation between weaving a web and catching food to stay alive, is it possible that we, as humans, do things which we don't understand the meaning behind?

I suppose this question has its roots in the "Free Will" debate. We have the gift of reason, but is it possible that even with reason as our guide, we don't really understand the underlying motives behind our own actions?

I'd really like to hear what you think, either in the form of comments or (more preferably) a video response.

The Spider Knows Not Why He Weaves His Web

This isn't one of my normal videos that I usually do. This one is of a more personal nature. In this one I discuss my person feelings about my abilities to articulate ideas, my personal feelings regarding my own intelligence, my ability to convey ideas clearly, and essentially, why I feel that I'm a little bit irrational in putting the pressure I put on myself to seem "smart."

I also talk about the idea of being intimidated by people who are far more intelligent than I am. Why do I feel that way?

On Articulation and Intelligence

My thoughts on the current state of social media and its impact on people's lives. Is social media an accurate depiction of reality? People spend so much time crafting an identity for themselves on the Internet that I think they lose sight of the real world.

We create an image of ourselves that we think the rest of the world wants to see, or that we think will get us the most attention. And people seem to have become so sensitive about their opinions that they have become completely willing to give up lifelong friendships over disagreements over politics.

I don't know what the future holds for Social Media, but I do know that it is changing, and so are people's opinions of it.

Social Media VS Reality

So what is determinism? Put simply, determinism is the idea that every action is ultimately caused by previous actions cause & effect. From what you decide to eat for dinner, to the position of every speck of dust in your house, to the temperature outside at this very second, these things were all determined by the physics of the Big Bang. An endless chain of cause and effect where everything happens because of the laws of nature...

With this in mind, it then becomes necessary to consider the idea of Free Will. The idea that we have the ability make choices independent of outside influences, and more specifically, regardless of those outside influences. Essentially, defying the cause and effect chain that lead up to you making the choice you made.

Now, I personally have a naturalistic worldview, which basically means that I believe the world is essentially made up of mass and energy, or the physical Universe and nothing else. I dont believe in a God, spirits or souls, or any type of supernatural energy. From this standpoint, it becomes very difficult to get away from a strictly deterministic view of the Universe.

Free Will And Determinism

I've noticed that lately one of the big points of contention between Theists and Atheists has been that of who must shoulder the burden of proof. Are Atheists obligated to demonstrate that God doesn't exist? Is it really a defensible claim to state that God does not exist? Is it possible to demonstrate such a claim?

Lately I've been struggling with this issue, but I'm coming to the conclusion that I may have been deluding myself, and that the whole thing is really a non-issue. Let me explain what I mean.
