This week we had our very first guest mix in the show. Tokyo's own Yukibeb was so kind that she made an amazing Valentine's Day Mix for us. Love & Feels. If you don't already know who Yukibeb is, here's a short bio:

"The 21 year old Tokyo native, Yukibeb, has only been making and posting her mixes on Soundcloud since 2011, but has quickly amassed global attention for the eclectic vibes and moods she conveys through her selections. Both intimate and sensual, the sounds she fuses represent her hip hop, future beats, and r&b sensibilities. The diaphanous soundscapes she creates for her hungry listeners reflect the intricate sounds that compliment the complex and fluorescent backdrop of the Tokyo underground.

While she holds the attention of many, Yukibeb genuinely wishes to bring visibility to lesser known artists and give them a larger platform for recognition. Headstrong and opinionated, she doesn't really care for hype, follows her strong intuition and instincts to curate her unique sound. Citing major influences like J Dilla, Aaliyah, Tokimonsta and fellow labelmates Ms. Beb is poised to pursue her passion as a DJ first in her hometown of Tokyo and next worldwide."

They had a Top 6 hit in UK with Fascination and a Gold Album in UK, where hits such as '10.000 Nights', 'Boyfriend' and 'The Spell' also charted. The album reached top 10 in the UK. In all, Anders & Anders had 5 top 30 singles in the UK with Alphabeat. Now Anders & Anders are working their way into the club scene with both songwriting and production. Bastard Jazz is proud to present the debut EP from Brussels based production duo Eric P & LuiGi aka MonkeyRobot.  Their trademark: exploring the boundaries of soulful music between 90 and 120 bpm. Catching eyes and ears worldwide through their work as 74 Miles Away (Melting Pot Music), and Hip-Hop production under the moniker Infinitskills, alongside radio play from Gilles Peterson, Lefto, Anthony Valadez (KCRW) & Kev Beadle and  Tall Black Guy, who selected their standout “Basement Infusion” track to be on his Tempo Dreams compilation album (released in June on Bastard Jazz), and alliance between the label and M.R. seemed natural.  

Here on their self-titled 12”, MonkeyRobot deliver four diverse tracks that showcase their skills behind the boards, the MPC and the keys, with a keen ear for the dancefloor. Kicking things off, “Brick Stomach” is a synth-heavy four-to-the-floor 120 BPM joint that comes off like a Floating Points visit back in time to 1980’s Detroit with it’s rolling snares, arpeggiating synth bassline  and cloudy pads. Next Up, “Northern Light”  filters shimmering space disco vibes through big, thumping instrumental Hip-Hop drums and moody analog bass.  On the flip, “Rosè Gris” takes things in a funkier direction at 100BPM with it’s syncopated drums, irresistible lead, squelching bassline and all manner of synthesizer explorations.  Rounding off the EP is “Last Days”, which still manages to inject a funky 80’s analog sound into it’s melancholy downtempo vibes.  This is a seriously strong debut from a truly musically talented duo – keep your eyes open for more!

For the fourth release in my series of free downloadable mixes, I’ve linked up with the versatile and talented DJ Mza (DP Sound / Turntable Addicts / Soul Circle Radio) to produce “The B-Boy Uprock Mix,” an ambitious, gritty mix of rock, hip hop and electronica.  Songs from seemingly disparate genres are fused together with heavy metal guitar riffs and nasty breakbeats.  Simply put, we wanted to put the violence back in dance music.  It’s a short, tight set that we’re hoping you’ll want to rock out to again and again... whether it be in the mosh pit or the b-boy circle.
