MM Cast 02: COYOTE

Is it Balearic? Recordings' capos Timm Sure and Ampo have been on the "Balearic Scene" even before the word "Balearic" got fashionable some years ago.  They started as djs in the early 90's becoming residents at the historical "Venus" in Nottingham, it was in 2002 when they became producers and from then on they started producing tracks under the moniker Coyote, being responsable of notorious works signed on "International Feel", "Needwant" and "Music for Dreams" to name a few, and of course on their own imprint "Is It Balearic? Recordings"

Was in 2006 when "IIB?" started and since then, and a long with the sublabels "Über" and "Magic Wand", 15 years of pure Balearic Bliss where the "brithish-downtempo-maestros" have featured artists from the likes of Max Essa, Danielle Baldelli, Dj Rocca, Bonnie & Klein, Mori Ra and Anton Klint to name a few.

2021 has been a very prolific year for Coyote, delivering an amazing EP "Return to life" and another remixes ep of their LP "Buzzard Country", both records on "Is It Balearic? Recordings". They also have been working for MM Discos doing a magical rework of Bonnie & Klein's Albatros

The contribution of the Nottingham based producers to the scene is unquestionable and crucial, being a constant influence for dj's and producers who decided to move forward with the sound that artists like Dj Alfredo, Paul Oakenfold or Jose Padilla discovered back in the days from the "white Island" to rest of the world.

When we talk about their sound, a question comes to our head,,"Is it Balearic?", of course it is, but more than this, this is COYOTE Sound!!

Danny McLewin aka Skyrager is one of my favorite people on the planet. His ability to dig out rare unheard of bangers and drop them hot on the dance floor sums up all the reasons we love to go out. Based out of England, Danny travels the world spreading love through music with the group Psychemagik and under his solo moniker Skyrager. An avid record collector and dealer, I'm always so excited to comb through all his mixes. Before After Hours takes you on a blissful musical odyssey. Next up on the @idlecellars mix series we have the legendary Phil Mison. One of my favourite DJ’s (and humans) his history alone is enough to warrant anyone’s respect but his music truly speaks for itself. I’m delighted to offer this exquisite journey from someone I consider to be an unsung hero of sorts. Certainly a hero of mine. He was there from day one. Some history here for those that don’t know his roots, in his own words…

“Cafe Del Mar opened in 1980, but never had a resident dj until José Padilla started  in 1991. I'd heard him play there that year and bought some tapes from him. I didn't go back in 92 but made a couple of tapes that a friend went out and gave him, similar stuff to what he was playing. Later that year i met him in Tag records in soho. He remembered the tapes and i invited him along to the Milk Bar where i was resident at the time. 

In early march 1993, José had an offer to go and DJ in asia and asked me if i wanted to cover for him at the Café Del Mar while he was away. Of course i said yes and a couple of weeks later he turned up at the Milk Bar with plane tickets and the keys to his house. I flew out at the end of March and played every day until the first week of May. I returned to London as i still had my residency at the Milk Bar and other gigs at the Ministry & Gardening Club. I went back for my birthday in September, played a couple more times and just hung out listening to music. 

José returned to London later that year for the winter. He asked if i wanted to be resident with him for the whole summer of 1994. I flew out late may and stayed until late september. I met quite a few people out there that year including Paul Daley, which led me onto becoming Leftfields tour DJ in 1996. Also Kennneth Bager, Harvey and a few others that are still good friends today.” Enjoy friends 🐬

As you can see, we also have a graphism switch with a new artist behind it, name of Anaïs Rallo. She is also a DJ under the name Blanca Brusci.

About Max's mix, he prepared a small presentation of what he recorded : " It’s partly a typical soundtrack to my day, but also a ‘travelogue’ of sorts. The music sparks memories and daydreams, causing my mind to wander to far off places, both experienced and imagined :-)"

Coyote are DJs/producers Timm Sure and Richard Hampson (aka Ampo). 
Since first meeting after both becoming residents at the historically important Venus club in Nottingham, between them they spent the 90s with residencies at many of the decades most seminal parties. As well as making regular appearances at countless events such as Andrew Weatherall's Sabresonic parties and Open All Hours at Ministry Of Sound, Ampo even guested as tour-DJ for Underworld.

Coyote officially came into being in 2004 when Timm and Ampo decided to start making music together. Since taking on the moniker, Coyote have had a wealth of releases and remixes on a huge array of labels including International Feel, Aficionado, and their own Is It Balearic? imprint, which was established in 2007. Initially conceived as merely a platform for their limited edition Coyote releases, the label now boasts an impressive list of artists and remixers that reads like a who's who of the Balearic music scene. Thanks to their distinctive sound as both DJs and music makers, Coyote find themselves regularly invited to play music all across the UK and further afield in places like Japan, Ibiza and Scandinavia. 
A big thanks to Timm & Ampo for taking the time to record this superb mix for The Sunrise Social. Is it Balearic? Most definitely!
