The Midrash

“Midrash” is both a methodology and a body of literature. In this lesson, we explore both aspects of Midrash. We study the various methods by which additional layers of meaning contained within the words -- or between the lines -- of the Torah are expounded. We also acquaint ourselves with some of the major Midrashic works that record the expositional teachings by the sages of the Talmudic era (approximately 100 BCE to 500 CE).

Midrash includes Halachic (legal) expositions, which extrapolate the details of the Torah’s laws from the text, as well as Agadic Midrashim -- moral, philosophical, and mystical teachings, as well as historical narratives and parables. We study examples from both of these varieties of Midrash, including a number of intricate legal expositions, and an esoteric parable relating to a celestial battle over the creation of the human being and the paradox of goodness and truth.

Election season is in full swing and the biggest issues facing our country are front and center. In this new series we cut through the politics to examine five critical issues through the lens of Torah wisdom.

Polls show that the #1 issue for Americans in this election cycle is the economy. Apparently, we care a lot about our bottom line. 

But when it comes to strengthening the economy, there are so many different approaches. One approach is to lower taxes and the cost of everyday goods, so as to put more money in the hands of working Americans. Another approach is to reduce taxes on businesses, so as to stimulate jobs creation. A third approach is to tariff foreign imports, so as to encourage domestic production and build the US workforce. And there are many other approaches.

In Lesson Five of Election 2024 we explore the topic of the economy from a unique and refreshing Jewish perspective. We analyze the biblical economic model to discover Torah's approach to taxation and building a thriving economy.
