Our beloved residents @childrenofvalis gifted us with a crisp new mix. Recorded at Open Source Radio Nijmegen, the duo curated a Detroit-inspired, groove-heavy set that warms both the heart and the feet.

“Tripura”

Caim’s Tripura EP kicks right off with the title track. Showcased here is an ability to surgically place dynamic percussion alongside more sensual and atmospheric elements. Somewhere in between the Deep House and Techno spectrum, this makes for a 7-minute trip, growing on you bar by bar.

The A2 track comes in punchy from the get-go, involving the listener with spaced-out stabs and clustered hats. Divine vocal one-shots frequent the arrangement and further increase Illusion’s hypnotizing-potential.

Floating chords form the crux in Libra while subtle acidic elements and razor sharp hats keep the momentum going all the way through. A peak time weapon in all its beauty.

“Xaja”

Psychedelic from the core and sprawling with detail, Caim closes the EP with the beautiful ‘Xaja’. Fleeting hats and a dreamy setup are soon enough nuanced by a moody undertone that drives you towards the final moments of the Tripura EP.

To complement his slot at our label launch at DoKa Amsterdam, Yubu provided us with a wonderful addition to the mix series. What we get is a colourful recording of one-off gems and tight rhythms warming us up for what's to come.

This new generation that never fails to amuse me….. 

I met Dorus (Doris Nicholas) when I went to Amsterdam while touring with one of my artists in 2018. 

I was brought into the Bret for their Tribe party while Doris was playing and his stage presence, mixing technique and track selection instantly caught my attention. Such elegance, precision and track selection in someone so young would never pass my eye and ears without being noticed. On a chat after his set I find out his age, something that makes me even prouder, so much in someone so young. You see, some things they are either are or not. Not every DJ is an artist as artistry is a talent, here I discovered a true artist, one I know will have a beautiful musical journey ahead of him. 

Further along our conversation I realise how much of an impact Jeff Mills and techno has on Dorus’ influences  which then indirectly explains the mixing style I spotted and such elegance. Being a techno head from early days and having Jeff and Rob Hood as my main school led this convo to last very long, one that has not stopped (and unlikely will ever stop) so more than one year later, here we are…. 

I invited Dorus to play my Toi Toi event at Guesthouse and he delivered the result of this techno (endless) conversation. Elegant, heady, linear, hypnotic [minimal] techno, a recording we then decided to put out here for you all to listen. This is a very conceptual and well structured piece of my favourite genre, techno and likes. Among the artists I work with / represent / love I can only name the queen Dygas who touches this line with such consistency so to see such a young artist branch out to it for me, was a great discovery. 

Another impressive aspect of this is that this is not to say Dorus is a techno dj, he is equally a great dj in other genres too, so this in itself breaks the idea that a DJ only plays one genre of music but rather explores all in a beautifully structured and genuine way. 

This is the extract of his first 2 hours of his set.
