80s On The Rhythm

Solid Steel (11th April) It's another special show this week, as we celebrate 30 years of Acid with an incredible mix by Posthuman to coincide with their last I Love Acid club night at Corsica Studios, London on Saturday 12th April. This is what they say about the mix;
"We put together this mix (with a little help from fellow I Love Acid residents Mark Archer & Placid) to celebrate 30 years of acid. 
We decided to pick one track per year, since 1984 - the year Roland stopped making the 303. Starting with Chicago House, expanding out into Detroit Techno and the evolutions in the acid sound from the UK & Europe, then into the late 90's Warp/Rephlex territory, right up to the present day."
The mix starts with Chris & Cosey's 1984 classic "Dancing Ghosts" and includes tracks from Phuture, 808 State, UR, Plastikman, AFX and Luke Vibert, who will be playing at the club night, plus their own new track 'Back to Acid'

I still remember the first time I stumbled on that first Jamiroquai CD. The year was 1993 and I walked by that Disc many times while shopping for 12 inch House Cuts at Record Time Music Store, right outside of Detroit. This day however, I remember picking up the CD "Emergency on Planet Earth" and being struck by the title and the cover, which was plain Black & White, but I could see through the side of the jewel case and see they had major Color and some Cool Art work on the inside. (I was intrigued) Mind you I still hadn't heard One Note from the album! :-) Well I took a chance that day and I was so glad I did. Jamiroquai's sound was so Jazzy Funky and just different. I was hooked...
My favorite tune on that first album: "Too Young To Die" leads off this Mix and "Lifeline" from their last official release: "Rock Dust Light Star" concludes the set. I'm really proud to have Remixes from all Seven albums represented on this playlist with; "Supersonic", "Cosmic Girl" and "Space Cowboy" leading the way. And I'm also proud to feature The Groups many different styles: Funk, Acid Jazz, Downtempto, R&B, and of course House! So if you enjoy Jamiroquai or just want to hear something different; This Mix is For You!!!

Back in the Cologne Rave Club days I've got a copy of this very interesting mix by my DJ friend Claus Bachor. This tape recorded live via SONY tape-recorder-mic in january 1988, at Hamburg´s legendary Front club, showing 46 Minutes of universal House riddim glory by Germany´s one and only real DJ legend Klaus Stockhausen behind the decks. This mix is regretfully in very poor sound condition but is characterized by an extrem euphoric party atmosphere where the crowd screams partially as hell to outstanding House tracks from the late 80s. Whatever your motivation as a musician, its hard to deny that most would wish for their music to have even a fraction of the significance that Nile Rodgers productions do. The ability to make not just era-defining, but also forward thinking and peerlessly dynamic music, meant that these creations very quickly became, and have remained such an essential part of the musical fabric that it's so so easy to take them for granted. No doubt having witnessed at least a thousand women of all ages lose their mind the moment any Chic, Sister Sledge or Diana Ross riff booms out at a wedding, its just something you accept and you no longer need to even analyse why 'I Want Your Love' is about as perfect a record than has ever been created…ever. Same with 'Let's Dance', 'Notorious', 'I'm Coming Out' and some of the more celebrated productions featured here. From his work with Chic, Diana Ross etc. with his partner Bernard Edwards to latter work with the 80's biggest icons, Nile Rodgers just made record after record where the magic wasn't confined to just the hook, or the riff, or the groove – but was simply dripping from every bar. 
 
Nonetheless, however much we break down every element and rapturously eulogise, nothing can say it better than the music itself, and Superix realises this. By hand-picking these 20 significant tracks from his epic production discography, Rix has created a sublime mix that allows the classics to breathe in full extended (and at times alternately mixed) form, next to lesser known gems, resulting in pretty much 90 minutes of the greatest music known to man. 
 
With Nile Rodgers recently releasing his fascinating and candid auto-biography 'Le Freak…' and even more excitingly been found in the studio with sons of his legacy, Daft Punk, there's no better time to revisit one of the people largely responsible for why Southern Hospitality and the world in general find themselves in the club week after week, still in search of that perfect groove.
