In the frame of the residency program NEW TECHNIQUES T.Will will give insight into his research into the interrelation of race, gender and melancholia. On May 15, we will release a DJ set by MCMLXXXV and a dance video shot at Sophiensæle in collaboration with Nkisi, Thyago Sainte, Kévin F. E. Bonono and Lucas Leclere. On May 17th, T.Will and Nkisi will join the dance scholar Mariama Diagne (IKM - Department of Cultural Management and Gender Studies, Vienna) for an artist talk on Zoom. CEM’s unique brand of emotive hysteria was forged in Herrensauna’s hedonistic Berlin furnace in the last few years, and as one of the party’s two core members, he has been at the heart of the operations since its inception. With the party attracting more and more attention for its critical contribution to Berlin’s queer community, as well as their raw italo-metal aesthetic, the opportunity came to move into Tresor, where it has cemented its place as a unique addition to Berlin’s nocturnal topography. CEM’s role in all this is twofold—firstly, as curator of the party’s unique mix of frenetic DJs and industrial-edged live performances; and secondly, as one of the resident DJs. The sheer pace of Herrensauna’s preferred grade of techno is offset by his enigmatic presence and selection. It’s a crucial edge of the party, and it’s rightfully brought CEM to the world’s attention.

MCMLXXXV is perhaps best known as a founding member of Herrensauna - the beloved queer party originating in Berlin - but the influence of his curational work resonates much further afield, encompassing the spheres of music, art and fashion with a sincere appreciation of subcultural movements and their associated aesthetics.
His DJ sets celebrate a countercultural approach to electronic music, drawing upon an intense, seductive fusion of charged rhythmic tension and obscure sonic imagery. With a comprehensive knowledge of genres ranging from EBM and electro to hard trance and industrial, his ability to weave seemingly disparate references together is the result of years spent dedicated to the underground, in all its grit and glamour.

Herrensauna reflects the need for a queer-led techno event in a city where underground and mainstream sit tensely alongside each other, and gentrification threatens the vast network of cultural spaces the city calls its own. Despite its name - a tongue-in-cheek reference to the clandestine culture of gay men’s saunas - it is the sense of community at the parties, which have now travelled the globe, that lend to their ever growing influence across the queer diaspora.

Upcoming highlights include showcases at Dekmantel Festival, Sonar 2022, as well as the release of the second V/A EP on Herrensaunas own Label featuring Slikback, Isabella, Crystallmess and more.

@herrensauna (a Community Bread collective) is one of our fave parties in Berlin, so we were very excited to have @thetruemcmlxxxv close out our livestream fundraiser launch. Unexpectedly, he delivered a unique set, of which we’d never heard from him before. Sampling an epic reading of the Tao Te Ching, the Taoist philosophical text, @thetruemcmlxxxv filled his set with tension & thoughtful pause, until he released into an acid-fuelled, swirly mix of breakbeat & techno.
