You like the sound of broken beats chopping away at each other in combination with stone-solid bass-like grooves, the ominous feeling of a mid-90s rave ghost pouring through your mid-21st century soul as you pound it out on the floor, eyes goggling and fingers trembling, in a sweat-box dungeon of a venue with smoke-machine veiled strangers and strobe-swathed blurs of your possible friends? Well then you’ve come to the right place.

Today we introduce London boy Boxia and his instalment in our feverishly delightful Mix the Belt series. He says his musical style is within the “Gully, Jungle, Techno, Dark House scene” and we dig that. And considering the banger’s he’s produced and delighted the likes of Rinse FM & Radio 1 with, we thought we’d give him a shot.

“Mix of the biggest tracks I’ve been playing for the last 6 months or so. Starting at 125bpm up to 135bpm. Consists of old and new tunes and edits from 1992 to today.”

The man behind our blog is back, like a horrible rash that just won’t go away, with his third and our sixth instalment of Mix the Belt.

A somewhere-around-the-60-minute-mark insight into the centre of one of the most prevalent bass music lusts in recent years: the trials and tribulations of 160bpm.

Starting at 150bpm and rising, the mix meanders its way around a complex array of future-hip-hop, footwork, juke & broken beat-rivulets into the upper echelons of 160bpm.

Music on the genre fringe – all collated, blended and mixed by the deft fingers of Bite the Belt head honch, Josh Swanson.

“No genre resides within a formula – music exists within feelings and loose frameworks that should be challenged and explored on every level. The space between 150 and 160 bpm harbours all manner of musical history and evolution, likewise it is a spacious bridge between almost entirely separate genres and one that is impossibly exciting to see re-emerging from the ashes. If something has become a precious, guarded treasure it’s time to find the key and get pilfering!”

Oh sweet heavenly father, we say unto thee, give us thine glorious broken beats so that we may shout with voices of thunder, so that we may descend into the deepest reaches of the oceanic void, so that we may bathe in the fiery hearts of this world’s volcanic mountains – as do the gods.

WW Records‘ co-owner & co-founder, Old Man Diode, is about to drop a terrifying, fuzzy, electronic-retro-pop, technastilicious-disaster of a bomb on us – and he’s doing it with his incredible partners of so many previous crimes: the beautiful Beth Rowley and Rick Holland. It’s called the Morning Gate EP.

In anticipation of the release and in celebration of the studio version of the track, which has a heavy, chopped Amen-focus, OMD has decided to drop us a mix inspired, entirely, by the legendary Amen Break.

Broken rhythms from so many of the past electronic eras; from the dawning days and the classics to the largest of the now – this one goes absolutely off!

The Summer sun recedes but the four-to-the-floor beat rolls ever on as this episode kicks up a wicked blaze of "housey numbers" (so sayeth Brad at the time of his presentation) from several Depot members including a debut share from our beautiful brother out in NZ, Lewis.

Not forgetting a BOOMBASTIC tribute to EA's record selling, cult-classic PlayStation 2 series, SSX (aka Super Snowboarding Xtreme), with three itchy Hip-Hop numbers pulled straight from DJ Atomica's radio booth which played out as soundtrack to SSX 3. Having not left the country in several years I was gassed when in 2022 I flew out for 7 days of Sun on the southern coast of Spain.

So gassed that I knocked up a little mix to listen to on the flight / coach / poolside heavily inspired by the soundtrack to and vibe of 2004 feature filme 'It's All Gone Pete Tong' as well as old Café del Mar compilation mixes from the late 90s and early 2000s.

J-SWAN DERULO PRESENTS "INJERA + VIBES" FT. IMO

We returned, once again, to Dalston's finest cafe/bar, Kaffa, to celebrate our 4th Birthday under the jazz-soaked, beats-welcoming, wood-furnished, dimly lit and always-smelling-delicious roof of Gillet Square legend Markos' tiny and vibing establishment.

To kick-off procedings, whilst the troops and punters trickled in over the course of the opening hours, Tune Depot head honch and self-elected (but never contested) leader, podcast presenter, content creator, Tune Depot WhatsApp group exploiter, procrastinator and fiend for curation: the Swan Dog Millionaire aka Josh Swanson aka J-Swan Derulo, stepped onto the deckles with the sole-intent of noodling through The Depot's "finer" dining selections of Contemporary, Afro and Classic Jazz records peppered amidst a deftly chosen blend of Hip-Hop and RnB.

With supporting contributions from his partner in life as much as in crime, the King's very own - and recently dubbed - "Queen of the Depot" - the most terrified-and-anxious-in-spite-of-overwhelming-eagerness DJ in town, IMO. Using what little gaps the King had graciously granted her (amidst his rapidly diminishing set-list), given the matriarch's impromptu and unforeseen request to actually play some records (even though they'd spent the whole run-up to the event saying they "definitely didn't want to" and were "too scared" - but literally on the day decided that actually they did), IMO laces the ground with a sublime and complimentary selection of classic Soul, Reggae and Disco... and the J-Swan couldn't have been more proud xx

NOTES FOR TRAINSPOTTERS:

1) The set opens with two beautiful, elating and dreamlike records shared by one of Josh's closest friends and Tune Depot member, Matt McLean aka Long Hair, who wasn't able to make it down for the night: one being from Polish Jazz Ensemble @bloto-music (who's musical stylings recently featured in the Tune Depot Podcast) and an extra special alt-metal/jazz-metal record that felt as appropriate to their shared love of the leftfield as it did a beautiful contribution to set whilst also doubling as a subtle wink to the musical darkness that McLoon sprinkles into J-Swans heart (via many a Barcle indeed)

2) You'll find two subtle (one not-so and one more-so) nods to TripHop & Lounge legend - and curator of one of The Tune Depot's favourite Boiler Room sets of all time, circa 2013 - and a man who had a huge influence on Josh's formative music years, @nightmares-on-wax

3) The whole set is peppered with records from @cortoalto, a rising talent in the UK contemporary jazz circuit, blending classical sensibilities with UKG/Electronic Dance Music/Hip-Hop & RnB inspired rhythms and Jazz-Fusion badness, who closed this year's @weoutherefestival with a stellar-stand-in set on the main stage and whom Josh + Imo caught laying down a serene and vibezin' set @ The Village Underground, Shoreditch only the weekend before the Kaffa Live X Tune Depot Birthday event. Naturally deserving of a celebratory position within the mix itself.

4) Credit to NZ-based Depot Member, the beautiful Lewis Ali on the @reynatropical selections and the specific 'Hey Jane' choice from @tylerthecreatorofficial's  to Depot OG and Hip Hop Dump curator, Brad Downs 

5) Special love dedicated to @cas-casisdead, not least for their incredible 2024 We Out Here performance. And to all of the incredible rappers coming out of Dublin right-about-now, goes without saying 🐐 @rejjiesnow but Curtisy (@user-929294845), amongst many other incredible artists emerging out of the scene, all of whom are welllllll worth their sticky-green salt.

EL PABLO DOESN'T DO A LATIN THING

We returned, once again, to Dalston's finest cafe/bar, Kaffa, to celebrate our 4th Birthday under the jazz-soaked, beats-welcoming, wood-furnished, dimly lit and always-smelling-delicious roof of Gillet Square legend Markos' tiny and vibing establishment.

2nd in-line on the decks was new Depot recruit, but long-time friend (if not somewhat estrange, reunited by The Depot itself), El Pablo: Stoke Newington-born-&-raised and the son of East London's Gina Southgate - a musical (often and almost exclusively jazz and free-fom-music-focused) live portait artist who paints her subjects in vibrant, abstract oils & waters, live as they perform - has taken up the pen and paintbrush as his own acomplished graphic designer, painter and all-round artist with a wavey clothing line under the same moniker, to boot. Not to mention El Pab's younger brother, Sancho: an emerging East-London-based UK Rap artist carrying the creative flame as much as the rest of his music-loving family.

With all that in mind we could trust El Pablo to put together - and he did and more than delivered - a laid-back blend of international Hip-Hop, Jazz, Afro & Reggae grooves (and he did play some Latin-sounding flavours, tbf) for the heads, as we continued our evening's journey along The Tune Depot collectives' gorgeous musical-buffet.

CHIPPY T’S BAD BWOY BREAKS AN’ BEATZ FROM THE ROUGH’N’TOUGH STREETS

Representing both The Tune Depot and 2024's founded, vinylist, dance party collective, Soul System (@soulsystemdance), long-time Depot 2.0 member and longer-time-friend-of-the-head-honch (Swanson), Chippy T, knew he was able to explore more than just his passions for Reggae, Lovers, Ska, Street Soul, Soul & RnB whilst operating the XDJs under the rough-loving arms of The Tune Depot.

A set builder with an artists' touch, an interior designer and antique collector's eye, coupled with a joiner's talent for design and polished assembly. Though the calluses on this man's fingers are as much a testament to his trade as they are his rough selections, rougher mixing and the occassional rifling through countless record sleeves @ Eldica Records. The East-London-based roughneck, hailing from the gull-spattered streets of Hastings, has an unfaltering passion for sound system culture, romance, sawdust, music, dancing, good times and (maybe above all) butter. So, it is without question that Chippy T can ALWAYS be trusted to provide a floor-shaking array of fist-pumping and booty-whining rhythms, from the very-very-fast to the very-very-slow. An early billing meant no Acid Rave this time around but, providing the all-important-bridge between the laid-back front end of the night's lineup and the imminent electro, techno, house and breaks thundering down the tracks, Chippy challenges the systems lower frequencies by weaving together the ruffest and tuffest street sounds available to him, expect racous, 90s, crusty Hip-Hop, Street Soul & Breakbeats abound.

For nearly two years Bite the Belt has been on the Nausika lock-down. The two young lads emerged on our radar in 2013, unsigned and unsung, with a track called Dominion - a piece so dangerously fresh and scandalously excellent that we couldn't help but drop jaws; "Just who are these boys and how exactly is this tune not in the dnb charts!?"...

We opened 2015 by interviewing the Nausika duo - following a well deserved signing to TeeBee's Subtitles Music - here we learned of the secrets to the, as of yet, still unsigned diamond track that we loved so very much... it would appear that the legendary Blu Mar Ten Music was as infatuated as we were...

Yesterday (15/06/2015), the incredible Dominion finally saw the light of incredible label-release days, crawling out from the underground & unknown and crashing into our audio systems, alongside a tasty little treat of similar throbbing Hz, Echoes.

Cheeky buggers that we are, we've swindled our way into the borders of the Blu Mar Ten Music citadel and they've given us the keys to the Nausika Dominon Guest Mix, and what a romper she is!

TD Mix Series: Summer HEATWAVES (Balearic, Trip-Hop, Dub, House & Electronica Mix) 14|08|2025

Our very own Bite the Belt reprobate and resident Lemon DJ, Hostile, is up for the Mix the Belt challenge this week and he’s bringing absolute fire.

Fresh Astrophonica noise from modern junglist Sully, forthcoming pieces of delight from Cosmic Bridge and a plethora of chart topping UTR tracks from every dark corner of the circuit. Too often are we in search of the next best sound on the scene, mixes packed exclusively with only the very latest releases. Whereas here we find a breath of fresh air that sheds thundering ushers of respect to incredible pieces that belong firmly outside of the ‘crate diggers’ vaults – in a digital decade where music is painfully throwaway it’s a delight to see someone celebrating the very best of what dnb has to offer without any regard for release date.

Pull-ups from the past 3 years of Om Unit, Machinedrum, Ivy Lab, Break & Moresounds with resounding nods to an even further (though I cringe when I use the word) past: Alix Perez’s Contradictions, the True Romance VIP and two absolute diamond tracks from someone who wasn’t always about making Gold Dust – original Bad Company member DJ Fresh dropping Heavyweight and The Gatekeeper back in ’09 and 2011, almost like a final sign-off before the commercial storm – and I really appreciate the nod of respect here by including them in the mix.

As vibrant as the punch it packs; fidgety, jungly, rolling with breaks and here for your free listening pleasure.
