After just eight years of operation, foremost Mexican label Akbal Music, run by DJ and producer Robbie Akbal, is now notching up an impressive 100th release with this new EP from the boss himself. It features the vocal talents of famous contemporary singer Cari Golden and comes with remixes by Mexcian producer Louie Fresco, Grant Dell and Fabio Giannelli. 

Akbal Music has offered up great EPs that cover minimal, techno and house and include artists like Guti, Eric Volta, Patlac, Audiofly and Hector amongst many others. Boss Robbie, meanwhile, has also released on Meanwhile and Culprit and is a revered DJ and producer as well as a keen A&R. 

The lead single in original form is ‘Im Just Watching’, a low swinging house tune with deep chords, kinetic drums and emotive, sexy vocal intonations by Cari Golden, who has worked with Fur Coat and DJ T before now. It’s the sort of subtly building groove that will really bring people to the floor and it brims with late night colour and seductive charm. 

Italian Fabio Giannelli, who is a Get Physical regular, flips the track into a more hypnotic, sombre affair that sways to and fro with wood block hits and a nice use of reverb. It’s physical but heartfelt and really eases under your skin. 

Then comes the on fire Louie Fresco, who runs Mexa and has a long and fruitful relationship with No.19 Music that ended up in a debut full length recently. His Stomp remix is a no messing, physical and tough tech track with lots of layered up drums, percussion and dark vocals that are like paranoid voices in your head. It’s a high pressure cut that will make floors sweat. Lastly, Grant Dell of Cougar Tracks and Chicago Transit Authority flips the track into a groaning bit of late night funk with occult synth sweeps, curious melodies and elastic bass that all come together like a deep and dark disco track. 

There is something for everyone here and this contemporary house EP is a fine one with which to celebrate hitting the 100 mark.

The seventh chapter is upon us.

For this latest story in sound, Sam Pauli and long-time collaborator Reiver draw on a blend of holy and unholy influences to bring us a new and heady mix.

Taking inspiration from a 16th Century a cappella choral piece, Aspice is a perfect summer track. Carried by choirs, a dreamy pad and an entrancing house groove we find ourselves transported: looking to the heavens, taking flight across azure skies. Uplifted, we skirt the edges of the divine...

Next up, Olivier Weiter (Armada/Sudbeat/Parquet) offers up his own take on things. For his first release on Chapter 24, Weiter maintains the original’s vocal sample while adding new hooks and interweaving complex and compelling textures into a tense and uplifting piece.

Where the original Aspice takes us to the sky, KatrinKa’s Edition is far more grounded, even subterranean. A heads down powerful groove takes hold in a track perfect for the dancefloor. Following a killer drop at the end of the main break, we find ourselves in the seventh circle of the inferno…and it’s never felt so good!

Finally, Chapter 24 co-founder Paul Nolan picks things up for his Look To The Universe Edition. With a relentless and entrancing groove allied to rolling bass guitar licks, the track unfolds into something of an epic, never once dragging despite its thirteen minutes. Cosmic and melancholic, this truly is music to make you feel connected with the universe.

We move in Constant Circles. Music, Art, Fashion, Life. The most perfect shape in existence, a mathematical certainty, with no beginning and no end. This is our journey. This is our sound.

With his own live show, plus releases on Knee Deep in Sound and Selador under his belt, the third offering from fast rising imprint Constant Circles welcomes tech house heavyweight Joal to the roster. In his debut EP on the label, Joal delivers three equally solid original tracks, brimming with raw energy. Add to this a stellar remix from Poker Flat and Soulfooled player David Durango, plus an original piece of art from Martin Vidal, and you have a release that will turn heads and ignite dance floors across the world.

Opening track ‘The Subsequence’ is a stunning cut of organic house, with a driving groove and weighty chords. Managing to be both deep and powerful, Joal demonstrates his production craftsmanship with a track that will work in a wide range of sets, blurring the lines between deep and tech house.

Equally as dynamic is ‘I Need To Go’, with its intricate groove running beneath swirling chords and an understated vocal hook. The soundscape cleverly builds and grows, with layers of pads and a striking lead, guiding us into a final crescendo that will see all hands firmly in the air.

Completing the selection of originals is ‘Mailbox’, in which Joal teams up with vocalist Lavinia Claws to deliver a slice of deep groovy house, with heavy bass tones, beautifully complex synth sounds and a unique spoken vocal. Leave a message at the tone…

On remix duty is Soulfooled staple David Durango, who has skillfully deconstructed ‘Mailbox’, stripping it down to the key elements and adding his trademark groove to supply a first class dance floor bomb.

And so continues the story of a label built on the foundations of an unquenchable thirst for the underground and a yearning for the sounds of the future, the past and all that emerges in between. Unceasing. Limitless. A constant circle.

For Chapter 24's tenth tale, they welcome Lausanne-based rising star Jeremy Vieira, aka Several Definitions. Showcasing the skills that have seen him signed to the likes of Diynamic, Suara, Knee Deep In Sound and Stil Vor Talent, Jeremy brings four cuts of the highest quality for his debut Chapter 24 release.

The Lost Valleys EP sums up the Several Definitions project perfectly. Spanning a spectrum of emotion: loss, love, and joy, somewhere between house and techno, each track combines warm atmospheres with rich, captivating melodies and is carried home by deep, rolling beats.

The EP opens with Cronos, a moody, dancefloor roller which builds into a cinematic climax.

The title track Lost Valleys is next, and ups the ante further. Undulating melody lines ebb and flow, becoming ever more intense. A weapon for peak times.

Atlas brings the same ambition and scope. Built around more stunning synth work, this evocative piece manages to be driving, heads down, percussive and cosmic all at the same time.

Finally, the sting in the tail: Recover. Demonstrating his mastery of arpeggios, Vieira brings the EP home with a surefire hit.

Several Definitions, perhaps; but each and every one of them to be savoured. The story continues on Chapter 24!

By convention, sweet is sweet, bitter is bitter, hot is hot, cold is cold, colour is colour; but in truth there are only atoms and the void. So it goes.

Chapter 24's fourteenth chapter sees label co-founders Sam Pauli & Paul Nolan continue their collaboration with Atoms. Witness the reaction that occurs when these two electrifying artists enter the same creative orbit. Joining them on this release are talents Miyagi and Danny Oliveira, for a stellar body of material.

Pauli and Nolan are at their best on Atoms, delivering a wonderful piece of electronic music. The Instrumental Edition is all glistening arpeggios and cosmic pads; whilst these fuse with the soaring vocals of fellow Chapter 24 artist Reiver on the Original.

The nature of atoms lies far below our powers of observation. Since atoms cannot be seen, their movements, too, escape us. As atoms travel through the void, they swerve from their course. Were it not so, they would remain forever isolated, and never meet to form the complexity of the universe. 

There are only atoms and the void. So it goes. 

But hold a mirror up to the void and you will discover that it is by no means empty nothingness. It contains particles of light which flicker in and out of existence.

Beyond the atoms, there is hope...
